Stockholders don't look kindly on shrinking margins. A corporation's fiduciary duty is to the stockholders. The management of the oil companies would be liable in a host of lawsuits if it became evident that they worked to intentionally shrink their profit margins.

I hate to rub this in but gas just dropped another three cents here and is now $1.99 for the first time since the end of July! Damn and I paid 2.02 at about 6 this evening.

Yes they do. I lost one of my cars to Katrina and was looking at one of those hybrids. Well, that is not gonna happen because I do not want to look like Fred Flintstone on the interstate.

Lindlaoo, consider a diesel from VW. Either the Jetta or the Passat. They both get excellent fuel mileage and they perform well. My wife has a diesel Passat and we love it.

Diesel is more expensive than gas right now, but driving cars that get 40+ MPG more than makes up for it.

No kidding. However, disasters like this wouldn't be considered intentional, it should be almost expected that the profits would dip a bit.

I think the national average will drop below $2.00 per gallon this winter. Not by much. and I doubt we'll ever see $1.50 gas again.

VW's are generally more expensive to fix than American cars. Diesel is not inherently any more expensive, though.

There is a Jeep Liberty in a diesel version.

I have no idea on what gas prices are back in the states... I know here they measure by liter and it is really inexpensive
