That's the point of the subRebel template...to offer something without any of the extras so it will load extra fast for those who may be on dial-up, at work and don't want (or shouldn't) have avatars showing, or just don't like the extra animations, etc. It is not supposed to show avatars. Try FI subSilver...a very nice, basic template that does show the avatars, as well as the necessary buttons on the top of the page.
