Season totals to date

#1 Postby bvigal » Sun Oct 30, 2005 9:54 am

I'm moving this from other thread. It should have been two separate topics! Sorry!

Posted 10/29:
This morning, after seeing Beta reach hurricane status, I decided to count up for myself the totals.

As of October 29 with Beta becoming a hurricane

Named storms 23
Total tropical cyclones 26
Hurricanes 13
Major Hurricanes 6
T Storms 10
T Depressions 3

Breakdown
Cat 5 - 3
Cat 4 - 2
Cat 3 - 1
Cat 2 - 1
Cat 1 - 6
TS - 10
TD - 3

Days with TD,TS or Hurricane 169
Days with TS or Hurricane (named) 120
Days with Hurricane 55
Days with Cat 3,4,5 Hurricane 24

I did it differently than the official "days" count used by Grey, etc. I simply counted how many different dates a storm was TD, TS, Hurricane, and Major (3-5).

SEASON AVERAGES SINCE 1950:
Major hurricanes - 2.3
Hurricanes - 5.9
Named storms - 9.6
Major hurricane days - 5

How do we have 176 days of TD/TS/H and 172 days in the season so far? There weren't any extra-seasonal storms this year.

bvigal counts overlapping hurricanes. like if we have two hurricanes during a day, it would count as 2 days.

Here are the numbers that Dr. Gray uses for counting cyclone days. I don't, however, have a tally for depressions nor have I included data on Gamma. Also, for instance, if a storm exists for only six hours for one day, it will be counted as .25 days rather than one.

Tropical Storm Days: 100.250
Hurricane Days: 44.625
Intense Hurricane Days: 15.459
