It can be fun, as a long as you're fully prepared and safe. BUT...if you've never experienced a hurricane before, Cat 1 or 2...even strong Tropical Storm force winds, can be very scary....especially at night

yeah thats what i mean....if you want to experience a hurricane (which most nuts like those found on board like this, including me, do) this is a good one to get. cat 1 most likely moving fast.

WHILE THE BEST ESTIMATE OF LANDFALL INTENSITY IS CATEGORY WO...
IT REMAINS POSSIBLE THAT WILMA COULD REACH FLORIDA AT
CATEGORY THREE INTENSITY.

Fast moving Cat 1's aren't bad (unless you're on the landfalling SE side and live on the coast) and could provide you some experience with dealing with these. Erin was like that for me, and that was the storm that turned me into a weather geek.

Just be prepped and watch the show.

not really worried about the house blowing away or the surge.......just worried about those tornadoes they keep talking about.....I don't want to be surprised in the middle of the night.......I have a two story....should I stay on the bottom floor?

I agree, dont worry so much about your roof blowing off but make sure you pull out the video camera. Trust me, I'd much rather deal with a fast moving Cat 1 or 2 rather then pulling an all nighter with Ivan or dealing with Dennis again. Just make sure you dont stay outside to long and watch for trees and powerlines  Stay safe everyone!

If your not in a flood prone area, I would stay on the bottom floor. For warnings... Leave TWC on tonight and when there's a warning they will play that BLARING siren noise which would wake a dead person.

Being a person who has lived in a high tornado-prone area for most of his life, the key to being prepared for a tornado is a NOAA Weather Radio with alert function and battery back up. Their SAME radios are even better -- they can be programmed to only activate for warnings in your (or selected) counties. NOAA Weather Radios should be utilized in homes like smoke detectors. During a tornado, you have only a few minutes of lead time and every second counts. Resorting to TWC isn't the best option as power outages can leave you at risk.

A little story about hurricanes spawning tornadoes...I remember during Floyd back in 1999, I was asleep in my upstairs bedroom and my dad came in and told me that a tornado was coming. But I was half asleep and the first thing I did was fully make my bed up--it was 1am. So anyway we went out on the front porch and couldn't see anything but we heard it pass overhead.

Stay inside and should be ok--don't do some of the stupid things I've done (walk outside in the eyewall of a hurricane--twice, with either trees falling or tin flying around, or chase a tornado--not in a vehicle but on two feet.)

Yep... the TWC thing is a last resort. I have a NOAA Weather Radio with SAME capability as well.

I am so glad you suggested that....see even when I thought I had thought of everything.........we have a weather radio but I didn't have a 9-volt battery to back it up.....just sent my hubby out and thank goodness he found a couple at the local CVS....see this is why it's important to communicate wisely on this board....it could actually end up saving somebody's life....thanks again!!

You can get one at Radio Shack or at a sporting goods store like Sports Authority.
