It is amazing. I came across this link this morning when looking for ham radio operators as I thought it would be interesting to know what was going on. When I found it I had no idea we would be able to get so much.

I just checked Storm Carib: Things are really going from bad to worse down there. Kevin reported in his last dispatch that 10 sliding glass doors in the building have been shattered by the wind and a man and 2 children are apparently lost somewhere in the building, according to building security. I can't believe he can still post in such conditions!

 after posting this earlier and reading all this I find out that my niece is in Cancun right now. At least I feel better knowing the government is efficient about evacuations and I know the shelters there are strong. They are evacuated inland that is all I am sure of but it is reassuring to read anything Kevin can get out.

No word for 3 hours and they've been hammered by the eyewall.
Hope these guys are ok. Its a bit worrying that 4 hours ago they
had structural damage occuring in their building...and its only been worse
since then.

A laptop and a buried phone line are all you need. In every hurricane to hit our area, the phone service never went out. In fact, I was in an AOL chatroom during Fran, doing a blow-by-blow update of the storm. When I finally reported the power went out, several people immediately thought I was lying, there was no way I could still be online. I pointed out that I was on a laptop and they were all like DOH, forgot about those handy devices. That very reason is why I keep land-line phone service. Even when the satellite is down due to winds/rain/snow/clouds and the power is out, as long as the phone line is active, I can still get up to the minute information. Besides our local cable company (which I can't get anyway, I live too far away, live too far away for DSL, won't pay for satellite!) has a habit of disconnecting the cable internet during severe weather. Most of the local ISP's do too, that's why I have a national provider.

Indeed. Mexico has really taken a beating this year. They've had it just as bad as the U.S.

Emily, Stan, and Wilma.

I can't remember the last time Mexico (the Atlantic side) was hit by 3 hurricanes.

Posted at 2:15. Sounds pretty bad. Hope they get through this okay. You have to wonder how high the surge will be. He was talking about 8meter high waves. Isn't that about 24-25 feet. On top of surge that would be bad. :(

Well, there has been no report from this Kevin guy since 2:15......Last report sounded very bad.
Someone posted this link, for more info possibly, but it is real slow.

Anyone know where I can find a map online that would show where the airport is? I worry my niece is not going to be able to get out after Wilma because this has gone on so long.

I heard a weather station in the area reported sustained winds of at least 90 kts for at least 8 hours.

WOW, that right there is enough to probably create damage comparable to a strong Cat 4 maybe even a 5.

These reports really tear your heart out.
No matter what Wilma does to Florida, later, it doesn't compare!

Even if were not completely ready... C'mon Wilma, get outta there!
