What's up with the giant eye?

Katrina and Rita had them. Now Wilma.

I do not remember many canes with such large eyes in the past. Why now?

Good question... I've wondered the same thing. However, Floyd had one and Frederic's eye was 35 nm wide. Maybe the NHC will comment after the season's over.

Actually, large eyes are quite common in big strong hurricanes. Ivan & Isabel also had them. If a strong cane lives long enough, it will almost certainly develop a large eye due to eyewall replacement cycles.

this large eye may be the only saving grace for cozumel.The eye is not far off the island now and will probably cross over in the next few hours with such a large eye and slow speed it should give them a decent break to catch their breath after going thru the eyewall!

That's not a large eye, I've seen much larger eyes on WPAC storms (up to 100 NM across).

Could the pattern that you can see within the eye right now have anything to do with the recon flying thru it?

Sesriously - you know how planes leave I believe they are called entrails some times - why could not the pattern of what appear to be ~trails~ not be influenced by recons runs in and out of the eyewall? If it is nuts then so be it, but seems it could be possible!

don't know about Isabel's eye but I am sure Frances last year had a 80nm eye whilst it was just sat there off the coast - moving at 4nm - the same at Wilma as it goes right now.

Isabel and Jeanne and Floyd had a 40 nm wide eye

Frances had a 45 nm wide eye

frances had a 70nm wide eye after she got disorganized in the bahamas, if i remember correctly.
