Why are people hooked on an ERC?

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Why are people hooked on an ERC?

#1 Postby shawn67 » Wed Oct 19, 2005 2:09 pm

Why do people think an ERC is going on now. There has been no information from recon that would lend credence to this? Thoughts?

ditto mate....
I'm just letting it go.

We will all know when the ERC is taking place.
Eye wall will open up... we'll see it in the vortex message.

You can see it on the visible.

Well, I admit I've been busy so I haven't been looking at recon, but ...

1) the eye was so tiny it's hard to see how the storm dynamics could sustain it,

2) the small eye has clouded over, although it does appear it still maintains its structure, and

3) what looks like a moat inbetween the old eyewall and a new larger eyewall has been appearing on visible sattelite.

The 11AM NHC discussion very clearly mentioned the beginning of an ERC.

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/refresh/MI ... 1459.shtml

As evidence that such may be occurring, it's pretty unlikely that surface winds would only be measured at 115 knots when the measured pressure is 892 mb without such a thing occurring.

It's bound to be happening.

I'm young and about beginner to intermediate (  ) but it kinda looked like dry air getting into the system. any thoughts?

ERC is the best bet though

This is absolutely not true. Recon data showed the formation of an outer eyewall as winds peaked to near 100 mph well away from the center, then decreased back to TS force, before the primary eyewall with cat 5 winds. A clear double wind maxima though the secondary (outer) is just in development at this time. Microwave satellite imagery reveals a clear outer eyewall is developing as well.

HOWEVER, There is some dry air issues with Wilma right now, but mainly non significant at this point. Nevertheless, and ERC is beginning at this time.

Hurricanes undergoing EWRC often take on the appearance of having dry air intrusion due to the ring of warmer cloud tops, etc; in this case, there is not dry air intrusion.
