30 foot surge confirmed by FEMA

#1 Postby dhweather » Mon Oct 17, 2005 10:21 am

I read this last night, it was in the Sun Herald (Biloxi) yesterday,
front page. FEMA/Corps of Engineers hopes to have their surge map complete in November. Spots up to 35 feet in Kiln/Diamondhead/BSL/Waveland.

They are measuring water lines in homes, so the waves are not
measured, just the pure surge. Many of the USGS elevation markers are
gone, so they are using I-10 for a base elevation.

Now this is much more believable. That is what I saw...water lines up to 35 feet and wave marks much higher than that.

there is absolutely no doubt that I had at least 28 feet at my house on the beach in West Biloxi... my neighbor, three houses up the street, is at 25 foot above sea level and I saw the water line in his house about 6 feet up the walls... he stayed in his house... he was very lucky he and his wife did not die as the two houses south of him were destroyed... he will never stay again he said... he is an insurance agent for Nationwide... he did NOT have flood insurance...

Thanks, DH. Gonna be an interesting thread once the nay-sayers get cranked up. I've pretty much decided to hold my eyewitness accounts in check as they don't seem to have much credibility anyway... No doubt, though, the proof's in the puddin'!!

By the way - I went to the FEMA Flood Zone Map on the web and now find that my neighborhood (zip 39530) is suddenly listed as "RELATIVE RISK = HIGH" whereas "before" Katrina, it was at the opposite end of the scale! Now the label says "YOUR FLOOD RISK IS SIGNIFICANT". Too bad they didn't tell me that BEFORE Katrina!!

http://hazards.fema.gov/wps/portal

p.s. - Interesting story from Frank whose neighbor is an insurance salesman and DID NOT have flood insurance either!! Easily, the last 100 years plus is now thrown out the window (literally!!)

Water mark

#5 Postby hurricanetrack » Mon Oct 17, 2005 1:31 pm

Jesse Bass, Mike Watkins and I just returned from Waveland and saw/photographed and videotaped the high water mark on I-10 where Hwy 603 is. You have to see it to believe it. I am absolutely shocked and am not afraid to admit it- I never would have thought such a rise in water was possible in my lifetime- but I saw the results first-hand. Jesse will have an impressive write up about this on his site and I will link to it on my site.

Here be de links for the Sun Herald articles:

http://www.sunherald.com/mld/sunherald/ ... 914861.htm

http://www.sunherald.com/mld/sunherald/ ... 914891.htm

I like this quote from the second one:

Bob Durrin, national flood insurance program specialist with FEMA's Region IV in Atlanta, said it's clear to him that there's nothing you can build that will withstand another Katrina.

"She was an absolute freak," he said.

Aaaaamen.

Like I've said, once you come here and see it, you'll have little doubt.

It's frightening how high the water got at that intersection, among other places.

What impresses me about that mark, other than its height, is how it is still so clearly visible. I sent pictures up north to my brother/sis-in-law to prove to their boss that he was wrong when he said it couldn't have gotten that high up.

Here they are:

Yes, once the official measurments are published it will silence the nay sayers. I've seen the debris line in Diamondhead and they approached 35 feet there on the bayou across the street from my house. My house is at 37 feet and we nearly got water in north Diamondhead......MGC

Now, keep in mind those pics are at I-10...about 5 to 6 miles inland.

Just think how amazing but at the same time horrific to see that water flowing past I-10!

Sadness but amazement.

Mississippi Storm Magnet ----
Those pictures are unreal. Did you stay? How did you get those pictures? Where was the person who took the pictures --- I guess on a roof.

No, I left when I got up Sunday and heard it was 165 mph. A friend of mine emailed me those photos, and said it was over in Biloxi, but he did not say where. It looks like someone was on top of their roof. I cannot believe those pictures. My house looked similar. I had 8 feet of water here in Diamondhead.
