What's the record for number of hurricanes in a season?

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Wilma will be 12 if it becomes one as forecast.

The record was 1969's-12 hurricanes formed in 1969. So we are about to tie that one too.

Also, most category 4 or stronger hurricanes set in a season: 5 set in 1999. 2005 could break that too.

12 is the record so we will in all likelyhood tie it.

Most major hurricanes in a season: Six in 2004.

Wilma is basically tying every single record 2005 hadn't broken yet. Now all we need is Alpha to put the asterisk on this epic season.

Most named storms in the Gulf - 11

*Tie* 1936, 2005 (unless we're up to 12 and I missed it).
