Hey Hey....Catching Up

Couple of quick things.

1. Sorry about not having a show these last 2 weeks...2 weeks ago was my son's birthday...and I was in Gulfport/Waveland/Biloxi with Mark and Jesse yesterday. More on that trip in a second.

2. We are VEEEEERRRY close to a depression just east of Jamaica. It is also going to be VERY interseting to see what the new globals do with the system now that it is further east than they thought earlier. I do think this is going to go ahead and develop...and get westward to about 82/83 west before it gets drawn up. More on this tomorrow...once I get a chance to look at everything and one I get caught up on my reading. My early early read is this may not sit down there for 5 days like the models are suggesting...but that's just a hunch and I can't back that up with much more than the slight shift to the east with the center fix.

One quick thing on Waveland. The railroad tracks made a huge difference in the level of relative destruction there. Athough everything in Waveland and Bay St. Louis was completely destroyed, the surge destruction south of the tracks is beyond description. The level of destruction is just as complete as what I saw after Andrew. The only difference is there are many trees still standing in Wavelend filled with debris, where as in Andrew there was nothing with a branch left on it.

In any event I am glad to be home...looks to be an interesting weekend ahead.

Thanks again for the nice notes from everyone...we'll be back next Thursday. And please...don't let people forget that the people of Waveland and Bay St. Louis need as much help as they can get.

Food, clothing, diapers, baby food, housing, a job. There are still ALOT of people living in tents and are sheltered at the Red Cross.

Housing is, by far, the biggest issue at hand. There are still people living
in tents in Hancock County!!!!!

I don't want to start a political diatribe, but I can say this, I've seen over
1,000 FEMA trailers sitting in pastures, staged, waiting to be deployed.

I don't care what it takes, you get the crews here and get those things
installed. If they have to send the 3rd infantry division in, do it.

It will start getting cold soon, can you imagine sleeping in a tent
(not by choice) in cold weather and rain?

and unfortunately there are still people here in florida whose lives are still on hold, still have blue tarps on their roofs, and others making false fema claims. if all of us just looked after our family & some neighbors what a difference it would make.
you know, look past the fence & offer to help. people want to send money to all kinds of charities (& that's good) but they don't think about helping the people down their own street.

prevention & preparation is better than trying to restore & rebuild. that's my soapbox for the night

Hey all, I feel like I need to set the record straight. I am giving all of the proceeds from the book to the community. Am I going to profit? Yes, and already have, but not from the book. I am a professional speaker and just by being down in the Gulf Region since Sept 3rd and Waveland since the 8th, I have added the topics of Communication, Leadership and Teambuilding to my One Sheet. I have been away on business or at home in OH 15 days since the first day I set foot in Waveland. Ask Chief Varnell, Brain Mollere, Mark Proulx or anyone at the Mass Care EOC meetings. In fact on my third trip to the area I went with the intentions of doing nothing but gathering interivews and guess what...I spent the entire time on the relief effort, zero interviews. As I am able to get online (for those in the Waveland area know internet is sporadic as best) updates will be sent to the folks putting the site together. What have I been doing down there instead of interviewing poeple??? Glad you asked. How about handling the transition from a FEMA POD at the Save a Center to a volunteer maned POD in Fred's. Making sure the medicle folks do not get run out of town by over zealious Health dept officials. Also, making sure the refriderated trucks have fuel so the food doesn't spoil. I invite anyone to come spend a week with me and lend a hand, anyone whose has been around the New Waveland Market can send you in my direction, just ask for Kevin.

Well I know Donna Barnes and her husband. And I also know ex sheriff Pete Pope now Mayor of Gautier. They would not have written to you like they did if they thought you were out for money. Do the Gulf Coast right and tell their stories. Most people do not even have a small clue of what we all went through and are still going through down here.

Thank you! That is exactly the purpose of http://www.femaforgotwaveland.com. I hate to say it but once you are one fuel stop outside of the area, people think everything is going "just fine down there". On my last flight back to Gulfport (thats right round trips out of MS) on the leg from Cleveland to Houston, the person seated next to me engaged in small talk and asked where I was going. I told her Waveland, and I shared some pictures and the conditions people were living in...she couldn't believe it. She also thought everything was "just fine". We need to make fellow Americans aware of the reality of what is happening to the people on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and Hurricane Katrina didn't ONLY hit New Orleans.

Here are the facts...we still have folks hoping to get a tent and bedding, NINE weeks after the storm. (how many tent cities are set up in Pakistan?) Many people do not have transportation, if they didn't have their car swept away, most had just enough salt water in them to mess up the electrical system. There are no laundry facilities or hot showers, although the Hardy Woodstove Company in Philadelphia, MS is donating the use of an outside woodstove to heat water for the showers, we pick it up on Thursday. Hospitals treating people with respiratory problems are advising them not to stay in their mold infested homes but pitch a tent (see the first listed fact). Families are still not able to reunite. Oh! wait a minute did I mention that we are living in the United States of America??? Sorry for the rant.

Anyway, people who would like to share their stories can email them to the site or post them in the feed back section for now. This weekend there will be a form added to the site along with a permission a use form where people can submit their stories. Once we have plenty of content we are going to send out press releases and hopefully bring some national press back to the area.
