Day and Night

#1 Postby jax » Thu Oct 13, 2005 3:55 pm

As I hear the countless stories of friends in their homes
watching the surge rise all morning, swimming to the next home,
getting in their boats and picking up people on their way to higher
ground... It frightens me to think how many deaths there would
have been had Katrina come ashore durring the night!

Think about it. Pitch black... not being able to see your hand in
front of your face... let alone the surge rising. The howling wind
not allowing you to yell to your wife or children... there would have
been thousands of more deaths. What a blessing that was to have
her come ashore in broad daylight...

Yeah, that's one of the surreal things I've thought about here too. While I was going through my own little ordeal here in my home, less than a block away folks were going through pure hell. And only two blocks away, people's lives were coming to a horrendous end.

Jax is right, if Katrina would have been a night-time storm, the result may have been significantly different - both in terms of absolute terror and perhaps in loss of life. Interestingly enough, Katrina is the first "day-time" storm I've ever experienced, and I've been through all of 'em here since Betsy in '65, although Georges did persist somewhat into the daylight hours.

It was a blessing for Mississippi that it came at daylight, if it didn't, not only would've many more citizens died, but many reporters and storm chasers would've also. Mike Theiss, Jim Reed, Jim Edds (storm chasers), and Jim Cantore (reporter for TWC) nearly were all killed, I cannot imagine what would've happened at night.

Yet, on the other hand, if it happened during night, the levees in New Orleans would've broke during broad daylight instead on Monday night, giving many people ample warning time instead of people drowing in their beds.

Pick your poison.

Not saying day storms are not scary but I find that night storms making landfall are much scarier for me because you can't see what is going on around you.
