Spot the preparedness information mistake

#1 Postby Recurve » Sat Oct 08, 2005 1:34 am

From the FEMA "Are You Ready?" preparedness book, chapter 2.3, "Hurricanes":

"All Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coastal areas are subject to hurricanes or tropical storms. Parts of the Southwest United States and the Pacific Coast experience heavy rains and floods each year from hurricanes spawned off Mexico. The Atlantic hurricane season lasts from June to November, with the peak season from mid-August to late October."

"spawned off Mexico"

Hurricanes can't "spawn" (form) over land.

peak season from mid-August to late October

Pretty sure that they consider peak season to end in September, early October at the latest.

June to November

The Atlantic hurricane season is officially from 1 June to 30 November.

Reading this as June to November, one could assume the season is over November 1, not 30.

Me too. The rest of it seems factual. They say off Mexico, not over Mexico. And parts of the southwest do sometimes get heavy rains from these storms.

But isn't that style of date usage very common in most of the world except the States, putting the day first rather than the month?

caribepr - the way it is written it would read ends November 1st - to be proper it should read - through November - to mean the end of November.

Those who said the season dates are wrong win the prize. It's not June to November, it should be "June to December," or "June through November."

I know a lot of folks (not anybody here of course!) are suprised that hurricane season isn't over until December 1. Looks like FEMA didn't know it either.

But June to December would be impling that hurricane season ended sometime in December, so techinally there is nothing wrong with that statement, June to November means that the season starts in June and ends in November, which is techinally correct, they just dont give the exact dates...

Through November would be the correct usage though who speaks proper English in this Country anymore. As for the SW US, we not only get flooding rains from hurricanes that form in EPAC (off Mexico) but on occasion they have come in with Tropical Storm intensity and there's the case of one Cat 1 hit in San Diego in 1858 that has been studied and documented. The last storm to come in as a TS was Nora in 1997 near Yuma. In 1967, a storm named Katrina caused some problems in AZ.

I can see that, but it's not precise. "June to November" implies that once it's November, it's over. "The season runs through the months of June to November" would be a more accurate wording.
