Louisiana Official Death Toll From Katrina Passes 1,000

As of today, the official death toll in Louisiana from Katrina has reached 1,003....this brings the total death toll from the hurricane to 1,243:

Tennessee: 1
Florida: 14
Alabama: 2
Georgia: 2
Mississippi: 221
Louisiana: 1003

Total: 1243

There was La. official on TV here in N.O. a few days ago who said we may never know the actual death toll because they fear many were lost into the river and marshes. Certainly an horrible thought. I guess there won't be a final number for a long time to come.

This was the case in the 1928 storm around the Lake in S. Florida....

when farmers began moving south from the lake there and began clearing the swamps, they found lots of bodies. I hear to this day they still find remains from that storm.

If people ever move back into the Delta and clear those marshes, this is what they will find....very sad.

Maybe we from this board could design a memorial for the missing and dead?

True! Many of my friends are stressed and want out because they can't stand the devastation and death caused by Katrina. It is so very sad that many have died and life is not what we knew. I have to fight the grief daily or else I would not be able to face another day.
However, we have been left here for a reason! We had the means to evacuate and now we have the means to help those that are worse off than even we are.
The best memorial we can ever offer is to help those that are still in need.

From what I was told, officials in Hancock Co. aren't counting bodies until they are positively identified. If true, this may be why there is a delay.

I'm wondering how many people were washed away when the surge receeded.

I'm afraid thousands. Last I saw 8,000 were still missing, but that was a week or two ago.

If you look at that list, of those who had been positively identified, a lot of those people were senior citizens.

And yes I agree, a lot of those bodies will never be found.

Not exactly because the flooding in New Orleans is more widespread.

In Mississippi more people got the heck out. New Orleans has a bunch of poor people that don't have the means to evacuate.

I think in the end the death toll will be the same in each State.

If you meant "post" stress, I'll agree. My wife is certainly in a different state of mind these days. We both lost our jobs - careers of 10+ years - with Grand Casino/Harrah's, and the immediate future is certainly looking bleak at best. At the 90-day point, post-Katrina, our income that we had become so used to will abruptly end. For those who have lost their jobs like us, many have also have lost everything else, and therefore, have left the coast, perhaps never to return again. Thankfully, I'm retired Air Force, so at least there's a little guarantee on some minimal income and health benefits won't be a problem for us (thank goodness for TRICARE!!)

One of the underlying symptoms is that many of the businesses here cannot open or are open only on a limited basis. Examples would be the restaurants like Ruby Tuesdays, Chili's, O'Charley's, Applebees, etc., because they cannot find wait or kitchen staff. Almost ANY business that has entry-level positions like those listed above is having a VERY hard time staying open - or even getting open. Once the FEMA money dries up, the disaster relief food stamp program goes away, and the casinos (most) stop paying their employees at 90 days, things are going to get REALLY depressing. The worst of times is yet to come...

Pre-Katrina stress ended on 28 August, Katrina stress started and stopped on August 29, and post-Katrina stress started on 30 August. What will we call the stress that is about to emerge???

Because some of the bodies they are recovering were already deceased before the storm. Cemetaries were destroyed in some areas.

also wikipedia has the death toll from Stan at 282 DIRECT and still rising with "hundreds more reported missing"

on the other threads we were debating Katrina's intensity well i got news it doesn't matter anymore this Monster was a killer.the death toll is in the pre-satallite era which is hard to believe in an age of Satallite,media ect
