S FL should not have a flood watch

#1 Postby boca » Thu Oct 06, 2005 7:21 am

Yes it is a rain event but this particular system doesn't warrant a watch because the areas of rain are scattered at best and are few and far between we might get light rain or drizzle but heavy rain not there. If I'm wrong I'll eat crow.

I was telling my husband the same thing this morning. I think it was unwarranted, but maybe the forecasters see something we don't?

Another good reason is on satelite no high cold tops which would produce flooding over our area.

Look at the picture. No doubt Western Mexico has a flood watch. It looks bad.

I've been wondering, "where is all the rain?" Down here in South Florida, we have been mostly in a dry slot. I do think there is still a risk of a significant rain event because of the possibility of extreme training effects. Some areas may get hit repeatedly.

Also, as the Stan-blog moves over us today, there may be effects from daytime heating over land. Some of those not very strong cells could blow up as they come ashore.

Just my opinion. Take it for what it is worth.

Their are higher cloud tops down in the Caribbean and moving NE towards the Bahams. If we were to see a flood event those higher tops would have to move N or NNE not NE. Sun is out in Boca Raton right now as I'm typing this.

This whole flood watch thing has literally been the sorriest weather forecast I've ever seen in my whole life.

Yesterday, and so far today - I've seen more rain with a typical summer T-storm day in June.

Sometimes high PWATs don't translate into rain.

I agree with you patrick99.In defense of the NWS it looked like we were going to get nailed with heavy rain yesterday.

The NWS is just being protective over the recent rain we just had and now they should drop the flood watch hopefully this afternoon.

We were in Coral Springs yesterday afternoon for 3 hours between 4 & 7 PM.
It rained hard for a solid hour around 5 PM. On the way home last night we encountered another deluge at about 8:30 PM from the Turnpike at Okeechobee in West Palm all the way to our garage in Royal Palm . I know it rained very hard for an hour between 9 & 10. Got up this AM to another deluge at about 4:30 AM. My rain gage says 3.6 inches in the last 24. Yep...it's been raining. 8-)

I woke up this morning and looked outside and poof there was water on the parking lot. Hmmmm wonder if it rained.

THEY DON'T CALL IT A WATCH FOR NOTHING!!!!!
It means those conditions are possible.
A WARNING MEANS IT IS HAPPENING !!!!!

Stop posting things like a 5 year old would.

I think the flood watch at least for some areas of SW Florida is probably warranted. It's been pretty soggy around here before all this mess started. Last night we had a few decent downpours and just a little while ago, the rains started cranking up. No winds to speak of...just a dark and gloomy day in store for our "little piece of paradise!"
 (sniff, sniff...just kidding!)

Here's a link to Key West radar which shows plenty of the wet stuff will be heading our way:

Stay dry everyone!

We haven't had much rain in Naples. Maybe, South Naples has had more than North Naples.

of course they do, thats why they are the forecasters and you aren't. It's only a watch which means:

Flash Flood Watch: Flash flooding is possible in or close to the watch area. Flash Flood Watches are generally issued for flooding that is expected to occur within 6 hours after heavy rains have ended.

The ingredients are in place.

Hi Ron,

I live in what's now called central Naples and the rains haven't been particularly heavy...just steady for about the last 45 minutes or so.

Nice day for shopping which sounds like a lot more fun right now than the work I'm supposed to be doing!

Exactly correct. I see things blossoming over the straits and hgeading northbound so maybe things are finally destabalizing. For all the naysayers Miami NWS in this mornings disco mentions the possibility of wiping out the FFA if things don't going. We have some sun here so that can only help to startt things.
