Huge Mound Of Ice In Virginia Still Hasn't Melted

ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- The grass is green and flowers are blooming in Alexandria, Virginia. But there's still a reminder of this year's winter weather: a mound of snow that just won't melt.

Alexandria maintenance crews spent hundreds of hours cleaning up after February's winter blast, which left the city covered in more than 18 inches of snow. Snow cleared from the roads was dumped at the city's maintenance yard.

Trucks dropped about 3,000 loads of snow in an area used to store maintenance equipment. As winter gave way to spring, much of the snow melted. The remainder became a brown, sooty heap of ice.

A city transportation official says the mound is still about 15 feet tall, 100 feet long and 40 feet wide.

He says it will melt eventually.

LOL! Wow. :o That is still pretty big. Wouldn't it be funny if it lasted until this upcoming winter?

That's pretty amazing. I bet there will still be some ice left by the 4th of July.

Amazing - but wonder if its shaded and how much exposure it has to direct sunlight.

But if its a mountain - it just takes time. Have they had any 90 or 100 degree days yet. It will melt quicker under those conditions.

Yikes! If the mound of snow is still that large and insulated it still will have some time to go. :o

I remember Virginia had a day or two in the low to mid 90's, which was rare for the early spring. It was around the same time Wisconsin to Kansas was in the 60's and 70's.

How cool is that. I tried to make a really big pile once when little. Sadly it lasted about a week only b/c my house is the first to have all the snow melt (due to our due south exposure), and b/c we live in NC :(
