A series of disturbances...

#1 Postby rainydaze » Wed Oct 05, 2005 8:46 am

From the Miami NWS Flood Watch Discussion....

* WHILE SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WILL BE SCATTERED TODAY ACROSS
SOUTH FLORIDA IN LOOSE ASSOCIATION WITH TAMMY...A COMPLICATED
UPPER ATMOSPHERE LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM IN THE NORTHEAST GULF OF
MEXICO IS EXPECTED TO CAUSE A SERIES OF DISTURBANCES TO MOVE
NORTH FROM THE NORTHWEST CARIBBEAN ACROSS SOUTH FLORIDA
BEGINNING TONIGHT.
IN ADDITION... A FRONT IS EXPECTED TO MOVE
INTO THE NORTHERN GULF OF MEXICO LATE THIS WEEK CREATING A VERY
FAVORABLE SITUATION FOR MORE HEAVY RAINFALL ACROSS SOUTH
FLORIDA. TRAIN ECHO EFFECTS...MEANING THUNDERSTORMS PRODUCING
VERY HEAVY RAINS DEVELOPING AND MOVING ACROSS THE SAME AREAS
OVER AND OVER...WILL BE POSSIBLE. AT THIS TIME...A GENERAL 5 TO
8 INCHES OF RAINFALL IS POSSIBLE ACROSS SOUTH FLORIDA MAINLY
FROM THIS EVENING THROUGH SATURDAY.

What does that mean a series of disturbances?

How would you define "disturbances"?

I would take that to mean that they are trying to figure out what is going on and that they will get back with us shortly.

The forecaster is referring to "short waves" or "vorticity maximums", similar to what is now off the northeast coast of the Yucatan, though I'm concerned that this cluster might be more than just what was mentioned above (we'll see if it's mentioned in the next TWO):

P.S. Here is a good glossary of definitions, per the NWS:
