#1 Postby fasterdisaster » Tue Oct 04, 2005 5:35 pm

Wasn't expecting to come home to this! I wonder if the name Stan will be retired?

I think it will be retired, especially if it surpasses Dennis' death toll (probable).

The NHC'S July Monthly Summary says Dennis death total is more than 32. I think just 59 will beat Dennis.

According to Wikipedia, Dennis killed at least 70 people (I think I read 76 as the final death toll somewhere else).

You are right,

Dennis caused at least 71 deaths in the United States and Caribbean

Where do you get this info?

Never mind I just found this article from ABC News:

59 is no where near enough to be retired. Bret in 1993 had 176, not retirement material

This would likely need to cause up to 1,000 before being considered

Well... Diana and Roxanne (the closest scenarios I can think of) were retired... why shouldn't Stan? From what I've seen on TV, its easily as bad as Roxanne.

The mountains are causing mudslides and also causing heavier rains because of the upslope winds... I am not surprised.

I thought about that, since Gert 1993 killed 76 people in Central America. But why the hell was Hurricane Klaus retired. Killed, like, 4 people.

And Klaus. Honestly. Why was Klaus retired?

Roxanne hit Cancun as a major hurricane, automatic retirement nearly every time

Diana didnt kill as many people, but it devastated the state of Veracruz (plus, it also passed just east of NC as a 4 in 1984, which may have influenced the decision)

If El Salvador (where the bulk of the deaths have been) requests for Stan to be retired, which is extremely likely, since they rarely get affected by Atlantic hurricanes like this, then it will be retired.

Klaus burst a dam in Georgia. Actually, the low pressure system that swallowed Klaus burst a dam in Georgia.

Cesar was retired, Stan will likely be retired.

slight correction, Marco burst the dam, not Klaus

Klaus was retired probably because it hit France. Remember, they were the ones behind the bogus forced retirement of Frances regardless as to whether or not it did anything

Correct.

I think Frances probably would've been retired without France's bogus complaint.

From what info I've been able to find on the internet about Klaus, I think Klaus caused severe flash flooding and mudlsides on Martinique, killing 8.

I think it was a similar situation to Hortense. A weak system that dumped a tremendous amount of rain.

The remnants of Klaus later caused serious flooding in South Carolina. This resulted in a dam burst that killed 4 people.

Actually, Diana killed at least 96 and left over 100 missing.

Hurricane Diana (1990) remains one of the most difficult storms to find info about on the Internet.
