Still not home....wanted to say hi to everyone

#1 Postby southerngale » Tue Oct 04, 2005 1:49 am

Howdy guys!

I've talked to a few people from Storm2k since the hurricane hit, but I wanted to check in and say hello to everyone. I'm in a hotel and paid for 24 hours of internet. Thanks for the thoughts and prayers. I'll tell more about everything that's happened later, but I can honestly say that I was the most scared I'd ever been. I still can't believe that there was a mandatory evacuation for where I evacuated to, but now it's easy to see why. Listening to the howling winds, hearing trees crash to the ground, watching roofs being peeled off right in front of me, and then watching parts of the motel coming off were just some of the lovely things Hurricane Rita brought to inland Jasper! A tree fell very close to the motel and many more all around it...I just knew one was going to fall on us. Knowing there were no emergency services if one did just added to the overwhelming fear and stress. I can't believe how high the winds were that far inland. Metal posts bent in two, large trees uprooted like twigs....Jasper has never seen anything like this. My hometown.....much worse. Although I haven't been back home yet, I've heard enough to know about the devastation. My area hadn't been hit by a major hurricane in a gazillion years.
From what I've heard, all of my family has suffered damage although we all still have houses to eventually go back to, repair and clean up. From people who have been there, many areas have been described as looking like a war zone, uprooted trees everywhere, many on houses, many destroyed buildings and homes. Hurricane Rita has changed my area...one mean storm we could have done without. :(

It's been a very draining experience, both emotionally and physically. I'm fortunate to be alive though....for many hours Friday night and Saturday morning (9/23, 9/24) I doubted even that. Conditions were awful after the storm hit as well....nothing I'd wish on my worst enemy.

Southerngale, happy to hear that you're ok. I'm in New Orleans, and I was very lucky. I'm in Algiers, which faired the best of any area within the city limits of New Orleans. It's really eye-opening to see that all the trees have been "topped" above the rooflines. It's as if someone came through the city with a two story high lawnmower. Certainly gives you an understanding of the power of a major hurricane. Parishes south of here look like they've been passed over with a giant shop-vac. We can all count our blessings, in one way or another.

I had heard through the grapevine you were safe, but it is much more comforting hearing it from you! My thoughts (and hopefully donations) are with you and so many others that continue to suffer.

I hope you are able to get home safely and that you and your family can rebuild you lives and your structures quickly.

I'm happy to hear you are fine. I can SO relate to what you went thru and your feelings.

Everything will get back to normal except it will have changed your thinking forever as now you know what a hurricane can do.

Hey, SG:

So glad to hear from you personally. What CharleySurvivor said is right on. In some ways your life will be forever altered and you will have a new and even deeper respect for the power of weather. I know you are a strong peson but don't feel badly about reaching out for help, if necessary. For me, I found writing a commentary on everything that happened worked as a type of therapy.

I don't envy you the tasks ahead and hope you don't run into too much red tape. Please let us know how we can help. In the meantime, please know my heart is breaking for you and all the others that have endured the wrath of Katrina and Rita.

Lynn

Please don't be a stranger and let us know how you are doing and what you need.

Hey sg,

Going on homeless for 5+ weeks. I've moved 4 times since the storm and will probably be moving again in a couple of weeks. Me, my wife and kids are scattered across the country, but we try to keep in touch as much as possible. I don't expect to be back in my home until maybe March or April (ugh). That's when we'll reunite. Trust me, there are still about 600,000 of us from SE LA that are dealing with what you guys in Texas are dealing with. Here are some tips if you haven't done them yet:

1) Call FEMA - They'll probably give you a $2,000 automatic distaster assistance. Then they'll kick in $2,350 or so in rental assistance about 2 weeks afterwards. Red Cross will give you at least $1000 as well. We all hate to be on the take, but hey, we're all taxpayers too. Every now and then the good guys need a little help too.

Take care.

I have heard about the damage in Beaumont but this is the first of my hearing about where you were!

Looks like you'll have your OWN survivor story to put in the next newsletter! :D

Hey there SG. You had very rough time over the past week or so and have been in our thoughts. I dont think many people in the Houston-Galveston Area really know how lucky we were. Best of wishes with your recovery.

Kelly, it was so great to see you in chat last night and now with this post on the board. I think you can tell that you have lots of friends here pulling for you and your community to get back to some sense of normalcy as soon as possible.

You have unique perspective to share with those on the boards who will be considering whether or not to evacuate in a future hurricane.

Stay in touch and take care!

After all the thoughtful care and tireless concern you personally offered to so many S2K members beginning on or about August 29th, then to have to go through this personally in your own town - and your "temporary" town - I can only imagine that you are drained, both physically and mentally. My family's thoughts are with you and yours and we continue to hope that the coming days will be brighter. Have faith, it'll all come out in the wash!! Glad you're safe and sound... The power of mother nature is truly awesome, isn't it!!

Kelly and Steve,
You comments, frankly, just leave me with nothing to say  , other than I feel the same as others have expressed here. While I know there is no way I can comprehend what you have gone through and will have to deal with in the future, my heart just goes out to you! God bless you and your families!
