FDA: Some Prepackaged Salads Linked To E. Coli

WASHINGTON -- The Food and Drug Administration is warning people not to eat certain Dole pre-packaged salads that have been connected to an outbreak of E. coli infections in Minnesota.

The people who got sick bought Dole salad products from a single grocery store chain, Rainbow Foods, in its Minnesota locations. However, the affected salad products are also distributed nationwide.

So far, there have been 11 reported cases of illness attributed to E. coli O157 in Minnesota. Of these cases, two people have been hospitalized. The latest reported illness was on Sept. 19.

The three prepackaged salad products involved are:

* Classic Romaine, with a "best-if-used-by (BIUB)" date of Sept. 23, 2005, and a production code beginning with "B250."

* American Blend, with a "best-if-used-by (BIUB)" date of Sept. 23, 2005, and a production code beginning with "B250."

* Greener Selection, with a "best-if-used-by (BIUB)" date of Sept. 22, 2005, and a production code beginning with "B250."

The "best-if-used-by" code date can be located in the upper right hand corner of the front of the bag. While stores are unlikely to still have this product on their shelves, consumers may have the product in their refrigerators. If you have any of the three packaged salads listed, you should dispose of them.

eeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!!!! i buy alot of pre-packaged salad too....but i dont buy dole much....and i sure wont now....uggg!! :18:

Due to the wrath of Rita, I already tossed all my salads out so if they had a BIUB date of 9/23 (landfall date), chances are it's already been pitched. :)

This is of concern, guess I'll skip the salad in a bag next time I go to Wal-Mart or Publix.

Ya know, when bagged salads hit the market and claimed to be triple-washed, I was skeptical. But then we got used to eating them.

Back to washing/making my own! You're advised to hand wash each lettuce leaf, both sides. Then chop or preferably tear into bite size pieces, put into collander and wash again.

You know that isn't a bad idea, except I am surrounded by neighbors who have their lawns chemically treated. I'm slightly downhill from one neighbor and where I'd place this garden is smack dab next to the other one who has the lawn, shrubs and trees, all chemically treated on a regular basis. Of course if I mention my concerns, they 'say' it's all natural. Sure, it is. Then why does the employee applying the yellow spray wearing a mask, gloves up to his eblows, long pants/sleeves and boots up to his knees? And my youngest daughter broke out into hives once after playing in this yard after a treatment (years ago)?

If I had a garden, I fear it would be doomed!

What!!!! I got some Dole romaine in the refrig. now. Alright let me re read that post and then I will check the salad bag I ate tonight. :eek:

Alright, weeew well I have leafy romaine not classic #1, and I don't see a BIUB date no where on that bag, but the dates provided where Sept. dates and I think I am okay, and I live in FL. But that stuff is scary :eek:
I really like Dole pre packaged lettuces, but dang .....things that make you go hummmmm.

Abajan- I wish I had the room to grow all my own vegi's but I don't. Just some. And the chickens would be fun but I don't think they allow chickens in the city limit here. :)

Friday night we went out to eat with Jim's family. We had a very nice dinner but I've been a little well, messed up ever since. Can't quite get over it. Sorry for that detail but now I'm wondering if it was something I ate and if this restaurant used bagged salads? Or pre-bought large mixes from the same company these small bags come from? Yikes, just thought it was my usual touchy uh, system.

I think I'm gonna go on a liquid diet for a while! LOL

With all the turkeys driving nowadays, I'm not surprised! Any chicken looking to cross the street probably has a death wish... Sorry, I haven't had my medication. :lol: :lol: ROFL!!

This thread just caught my attention.

My husbands boss was hospitalized a few days ago with a severe case of E-coli!! He was in South Carolina though. He has no idea where he could have contracted it from. I guess I will pass this info onto him. :eek: Poor guy just had a triple by-pass a few months back, so his body is really struggling to fight this.

Prayers and thoughts sent to your husband's boss from central NC!

Some restaurants probably serve already made/pre-packaged salad at their bars or off the menu.

Eric, I never thought of that. That is one option I will mention to him. I think the poor guy is just trying to figure out how come he got sick and no one else in his family did. Thanks for the prayers. :wink:
