I need some assistance with some research

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

I need some assistance with some research

#1 Postby DoctorHurricane2003 » Sun Oct 02, 2005 2:07 pm

Does anyone know of a website or other reference where I can get SST data or more specifically SSTA data dating back to the 1940s?

I am doing a research paper titled "The Role of the Atlantic Thermohaline Circulation in Increased Atlantic Tropical Cyclone Activity" and your help would much be appreciated! :D

On a secondary note...does anyone know of a website or other reference where I can get a graphic of Atlantic Major Hurricanes for the said periods 1940-1969, 1970-1994, and 1995-2005?

Thanks! :)

Use the "Query storm tracks" tool to find storms of a certain strength in a certain time period and/or location on the Coastal Services Center page:

You've probably seen this on Mark's site, but in case nobody has, its a really nice historical track site, dating back to 1851. Its a really good tool.

The Kaplan SST dataset will cover back to the 1940s for you. I think it can be obtained through ftp from the Climate Diagnostics Center. http://www.cdc.noaa.gov/cdc/data.kaplan_sst.html It looks like it is in netCDF format though, so you may need to know how to use something like GrADS to read the data file or display it.
