90-99L for the Atlantic. That's just how it goes. They go through them and then start over back at 90L again.

The numbers are recycled starting with 90 going on thru 99 and then starting at 90 again. The letters represent the individual ocean basin that the invest is in. Like the letter L represents the Atlantic Ocean basin. The letter E represents the Eastern Pacific. The letter C represents the Central Pacific. W represents the Western Pacific. The Letter A represents the Arabian Sea. B represents the Bay of Bengal. P represents the South Pacific and finally S represents the South Indian Ocean. I hope that this helps you out!

Exactly. Excellent explaination.

For waht it's worth...in the old days...they used to call invests "tropical seedlings" or something like that...and they were numbered 1 through whatever number. So instead of an invest, for example, something would be named "tropical seedling 33"...and the number would continue to build until the end of the season.

However...since there are probably not going to be any instances of more than 10 invests at any one time...especially in the information/data age it's more practical to rotate the headers from a data standpoint.
