Anyone watch "Joey" last night?

#1 Postby Miss Mary » Fri Sep 23, 2005 8:00 am

We missed the last 20 minutes. When I programmed the VCR I decided to run over the 30 minute timeslot, thinking what is an extra 10 minutes. We didn't realize it was an hour long season premiere - dang it!

The last scene we saw was in Joey's apt.: everyone was there just about, Zach, Michael, his date and his date's friend was up in Joey's bedroom, Gina and Alex. Everyone was complaining to Joey and he was telling them they were driving him crazy.

If you can tell me what happened next, that'd be great. I take it this Zach will become Joey's new best friend?

Mary-
Gina convinced Joey to try again. She talked about when they were kids -that she believed in him then; believes in him now. Joey went back to the audition refusing to take no for an answer, but didn't realize he was audtioning for a different movie, so the casting directors were confused-pretty funny. Next scene Joey explains this to Zach and Michael and says they had him audition for a lead in a blockbuster movie after that, so he knew he wouldn't get it -too big of a part. Gina walks in and tells him he got it with his agent confirming it. Flash to the date...Joey shows up in a suit and Alex asks where they are all going to celebrate. He says he wants to celebrate with just her. They climb up a ladder to a candlelight dinner on the roof with her favorite flowers on the table. They have a sweet conversation and she asks Joey if they can go downstairs. Joey then informs her that his job was done and they could go back to being friends now. Surprised, Alex agrees. Joey starts to leave and then says or friends that get together once in a while and she plays along like he is still joking. Hope I did not make this post too long.

Oh no, your lost reply was perfect!!! Aww, I missed that scene on the roof....dang it. I really like Alex. She is so sweet and hot, as some male fans think. But more importantly she just reminds me of the female Friends characters, how non-sleezy Rachel, Monica and Phoebe were. Sure they went thru a lot of guys but they never dressed or acted the way Gina does. So right from the start, Alex was different. I did want her with Joey. So I take it they're going back to being friends although they've now slept together just once? If so, wonder how that is going to work. Also, I'm not stupid here - it's a writing ploy. Have them pretend to being just good friends all season long, but near the end, one of them realize they have feelings for the other. So come next May, they'll hook up again. Shades of Ross and Rachel maybe? Although Joey seems almost like on even ground with her. She is a lawyer and he's on that dumb side, book wise, but more street wise than Alex. So they seem to meet in the middle sort of. With R/R, Ross always came off nerdy, where as Rachel came off as cool. I wanted her with Ross, but in real life you would have to wonder, what does Rachel see in Ross again? LOL

One final ? - is this Zach, the actor/character the writers intend for Joey's new best friend (a Joey/Chandler type close friendship)? I am now thinking of that Friends scene in Central Perk, Joey misunderstanding Chandler holding the second ID bracelet - "is this friendship? I think so!".....you know the one!!! LOL

Thanks for your reply.

I think that Zach is going to become Joey's best friend. BTW, the bracelet eposode is one of my and my husband's favorites! Could it BE any more funny? Anyhow....

I could picture Alex and Joey together - she keeps him grounded and he keeps her from being too serious. I got the impression that Alex was disappointed, so I can see this being a Ross/Rachel type of thing.

I have to admit that even though I love Joey and Alex, my favorite character is Joey's agent! I loved her in Best in Show and legally Blonde and she really adds a lot to the show!!

No it could not BE anymore funny than that.....I think that's why we want Joey to find a new best friend, not to replace the best one there ever was, Mr. Chandler Bing (a-ling!!!), but he needs someone to talk to. Besides family, neighbors or agents. Listen to me, Chandler was a neighbor, a roomie at that! But so much more....probably the brother Joey never had.

My hubby likes the agent too. She's growing on me.

I had the hardest time last year liking Gina. No one, even Janice, was this sleezy looking, on Friends. I kept saying this to myself each week. Where did they dig up this actress from? And get this, she's so much younger than her character is!!! Sort of a reversal from Courteney Cox and Monica.

Alex just seemed perfect for the show. And Michael. I will wait to see if the agent grows on me more.

One thing also missing is a CA-style Central Perk. Joey needs one regular hang out besides his apt. Since his job keeps changing, it can't be his work place. I even wrote to the writers last year, af if they'd take my suggestions to heart. I suggested a gym, a park (get Joey a dog!), coffee shop (again, way too obvious but maybe a smoothie bar?), something!

So far the action moves between his place, occasionally Gina's and Alex's, then the agent. Then on-location shoots or auditions. That's about it.

I'm still gonna watch. It's nothing at all like Friends was. How can it be? That only happens once every what 10 years? I was a diehard, loyal Friends fan to the end. Cried actual tears when they turned their keys in and left Monica's for good. Cried! This is why Brad Pitt is off my hottie list. And I won't pay to see one of his movies anymore! 'nuff said!

I don't think anyone could replace Chandler, either. I guess I meant to say his closest friend in California. I know they said that the cast of friends won't be on there any time soon, but it surprises me they don't have Joey on the phone with Chandler once in a while. They wouldn't need Chandler to say anything -just have Joey responding. Something to show they have not lost touch. I mean, wouldn't Joey be calling Chadler to say he got a lead in a movie?

I like your idea of a locale where they all hang out and will add my idea to your suggestions. (Although I love dogs, so the dog park idea really hooked me!) Since Joey is obsessed with sandwiches, what about a local sandwich shop?

Chad! Chad! Chad!

OMG.....I swear I thought you of all fans would be more in the know that I was!!! Here I thought it was a 30 minute show, programmed it to tape 10 minutes longer (shades of later, longer Friends episodes, just in case) and here it went to an hour! Sooooo......an arrrggggg from me, cause we missed the last 20 minutes. Thank goodness for Chicagopizza/Elle - she filled me in.

As far as a repeat, I don't know where you'd find it, I do have the first 40 minutes on a VCR tape. If you want it. I will NOT erase it until we see if it will be repeated. Let's hope NBC does, since there was so much going on weather wise in our country then.

If you want a scene by scene synopsis from me, I'll PM you.

Elle - oh I knew what you meant, Joey's new CA best bud. Chandler was just so unique though....near the end of the Friends 10 Season run, I had managed to hook my two daughters into watching. When Friends started they were quite young....LOL And I could not let them watch back then!!! But by the time Rachel got pregnant I said go ahead and I quickly filled them in on who was who, what had transpired so far. Then of course reruns were all over the place so in no time my oldest daughter Nina, who's off to college now, became more of an expert on Friends trivia than I was! She kicked my butt in games. At a recent sorority rush they had a Friends trivia game and she cleaned up. LOL I knew she would. She remembers such tiny details, it always amazes me. And of course they both say I could not have let them watch in the beginning - seeing Monica and Rachel waking up so many different guys each morning! Mommy, what were they doing? Anyway....long story short, they kept asking me - who is your favorite Friends character Mom....I couldn't say. I loved all 6 for many different reasons. But since they kept asking, I finally said out of all 6, the one character who was the same thruout the whole show, didn't change and could always make you laugh, no matter what - Mr. Chanlder Bing (a-ling!). Chandler is my favorite Friend, when you get right down to it. To this day if we catch a rerun, within one minute my girls know what has happened so far, what scene is coming next.....it always kills me they know this show so well! I need to add their dad usually groans I made them into Friends fanatics too....he watched with us but isn't into trivia or reruns!

Mary

PS - Elle, yes, yes, yes to the sandwich shop idea! You could have Gina pop in and say we're eating sandwiches again, I'm on a diet.......Joey saying, bread, good, meat, good, cheese, good.....okay, trivia ? time, what scene am I referring to and it's not about a sandwich!!!

MARY, MARY, MARY. You're telling me I missed the season premiere. It was the only show on TV this fall I had any interest in seeing the premiere off!! I was too focused on Rita, I guess.

  :grr:

Mary, if we can work out an arrangement for me to send you a videotape so that you can record what you have onto the tape I send you or if you'd be willing to loan me the videotape, please PM me.

Mary-
You and your daughters would fit right into my family! My mom is a huge Friends fan, so I think I am going to buy her the dvds for Christmas. She won't even take phone calls when Friends reruns are on which I think is kind of funny! I should talk -I think one of the most romantic tv kisses of all time was Ross and Rachel at the coffee house in the rain!! And Chandler and Monica's engagement- wow!! It's wierd because you have to practically drag me into the movies, but prime time tv 3 days a week is addictive!!

Anyhow, I'll take a stab at your trivia question. I'm not sure, but could that have been the episode where Phoebe was eating meat because she was preggo in exchange for Joey giving it up to save a cow? He was asking her what she was putting on the sandwich. Did I get it right?

BTW, if I see they are re-running the Joey episode, I'll post it here so that you all can see it from start to finish.

Elle - oh I'm so sorry, but it was the dinner where Rachel made Trifle. With ground meat in it! Yuck! She was explaining what each layer was, b/c she used a clear glass trifle dish. When she got to the meat part, Ross looked at Joey. Later when everyone was trying it, they were all about to gag. Didn't someone eat theirs in the bathroom? LOL Anyway, Ross said this tastes like feet! And Joey says I don't know what you're talking about, what's not to like....that's when he said peas, goods, meat, good, on and on. Later it was revealed she was reading a recipe from one dish which has stuck to another page, and stuck to another recipe. So it was a terrible combo of two recipes. Ross and Monica's wacky mother announced - Rachel, dear, there is no meat in Trifle!

Had to laugh at your mom not taking phone calls during reruns. I imagine she wouldn't answer the doorbell either! Well, here's my quirky habit - for many of my favorite shows, to really get into each episode, I had/have to hear the theme song. So even for umpteen reruns, Nina has to announce - wait, don't forward over the theme song, mom HAS to hear it! And of course for some seasons, they shorten it (on aired reruns, not the DVD's). I notice that!

My very favorite ep of all time is the TOW Ross finds out - the kiss in Central Perk. Everything about that scene is perfect - the rain, the door locks, the music! I still get goosebumps if I stumble upon that scene. If we're on vacation and we see it being aired, waiting for everyone to get ready for dinner, the girls and I stop dead in our tracks.....awww, they say this is Mom's favorite episode Dad! He knows, he knows....to which he's got the car keys in his hand threatening to eat all by himself, come on you've all seen this episode HOW many times by now? We grudgingly turn on the hotel TV.....ugh!

Trivia about that episode......did you know that the DVD version contains a deleted scene? I have not read this to confirm it, but I swear the cat shelter scene with Ross and Julie, as they were about to 'get a cat', was not aired first run. When we got that season on DVD, I sat up and took notice! The kids were asking why that was important, I said I've never seen this scene until now. You could see the personal turmoil Ross was in - possibly getting more serious with Julie or wanting his true love, Rachel. Not a CAT!

Mary

PS - Jason, I'll PM Chad to see if he wants my VCR tape. He could mail to you after that. It's just a simple 8 hour tape we record weekly show on, over and over again. I wouldn't need it back. I'm also hoping NBC airs it again. Write to them, it can't hurt. I'll write for you, pretending I didn't see it. Well, to be honest, I did miss 20 minutes of it!

PSS - my second fave Friends ep is probably TOW the blackout...."I'm stuck in an ATM vestibule with Jill Goodacker!"......come on now, I know you can say it the way Chandler did!

Just an FYI... Joey had lower ratings than CBS and UPN in that hour.

Yeah I know about the low ratings. I hope Joey makes it thru this season. There's just no comparison to Friends, but former Friends fans had hoped for more by now. By last October to be flat out honest! But I still watch.

I think that Joey still has a chance to do well. At least I hope so.

Mary- I guess I need a friends refresher! :) I forgot about the trifle episode. BTW, I completey understand the theme song thing! I'm the same way. Maybe someone should start a thread for favorite tv theme show songs!

Elle - well, my favorite shows with great theme songs were, in no particular order....

-Dallas (back in the day, I heard a semi honk his horn, it was the D theme!)

-St. Elsewhere (probably the best one, I've heard classical versions of it played while waiting in the dentist office!).

-Friends (need I say more?)

-Northern Exposure

-ER (probably right after St. E.!)

-Cheers

On the flip side, my current fave sitcom right now is Two and a Half Men. We love that show. So funny, each and every episode. But we hate the theme song! Usually you just hear it - Mennnnn! But when they show all 3 in tuxes around the mike, it just doesn't fit with how funny this show is!

Do you have any faves?

Now that Two and a Half men song is stuck in my head! hahaha I love the show, though.

Favorite tv show songs..hmmm...

The Jeffersons, the Facts of Life and Mad About You all had great theme songs. More recently, Joan of Arcadia (sadly cancelled), ER, and the theme song to the Olympics whenever they air.

I am now thinking of that Friends scene in Central Perk, Joey misunderstanding Chandler holding the second ID bracelet - "is this friendship? I think so!".....you know the one!!! LOL

Joey: We are bracelet buddies

Chandler to rest of gang: Thats what they'll call us
