We know the big names like Dennis, Katrina, and Rita, but we have had other storms as well. What do you all think could have been a bad storm, or was almost there. A storm that could have made landfall but didn't, a storm that could have been stronger but wasn't.

You are absolutely correct about Bret. It would have likely been similar to its 1999 counterpart if it moved northward; little shear, warm temps, and very well organized satellite signature.
Other storms that could have been bad include Franklin (if it looped back to Florida), or Irene (New England hurricane?), in my opinion.

Get for some flaming, another "what if" thread.
Anyhow, what I think:
1) Arlene, had he formed during the peak, would've been bad.
2) Bret, Gert, Jose, for obvious reasons.
3) Franklin, he was forecasted to impact Florida and move into the GOM initially.
4) Emily, she weakened right before hitting the Yucatan
5) Ophelia, if it weren't for the dry air it would've been a Cat 4 into NC
