Potential strength of 99L, West Gulf water temps?

#1 Postby HouTXmetro » Tue Sep 27, 2005 10:27 am

If 99L took a track into the West Gulf, could the water temps support a major Hurricane? Let's say the storm moved WNW towards the Mexican Coast then headed N towards the Texas Coast. How strong could it be?

and then ofcourse Rita bombed big time in the Gulf and became the third strongest pressure wise hurricane on record. Its so amazing this year how many major hurricanes have entered the Gulf this year. My goodness.

Here is the latest charts, after Rita...

The areas traversed by both Rita and Katrina have taken some bite out of the GOM as far as SST's..

Not only is the NW Caribbean still extremely warm, but areas just to the east of Tx are still quite warm.

SSTs are a strong contibuting factor, but probably being hyped a bit too much as of late(with relation to development of strong storms). There's plenty of heat out there to support development, and likely will be through the end of the season.

With perfect conditions, at a minimum, how warm does the SST need to be to sustain a CAT 3 or higher?

I know  It's crazy. Every 70 mph+ storm that has entered the GOM this year has exploded to near cat 5.

Would someone be so kind as to move those 90 degree waters away from my coast.

Like to Antartica please.
