Mary,
I love that carpet idea! When I was in college the carpet in our rooms was ugly dark brown( think hide anything, never clean it). It was disgusting. I wish we had thought of that. We did "make" curtains for our room. We had (again horrible brown) curtains that were supplied to us and not having much money, or a sewing machine (or sewing ability for that matter!). We bought inexpensive fabric and covered the old curtains with it. I think we might have stapled it!!! The existing curtains were heavy, insulated things ( though I can't see how much good insulated curtains did on windows that leaked enough to let the snow in!). It sure wasn't home, but it was ours.
Glad to hear that Nina is doing well. The 2 months will fly, just think about how fast the summer went!

weathermom - your dorm room sounds just hideous! How in the world did you ever stand it? LOL I would have done anything too, like you did, to cover the nasty old drapes! I had a neighbor on our street once that actually stapled her window treatments to the wall! No lie....when you said that, I thought of her. Nina's floor is old linoleum, somewhat clean but not really. If they run around barefoot, before long the bottoms of their feet are black. You know how flip flops are in, she has several. She just slips them off and on, all day long. I wonder how she'll manage in December...he he.

She wanted to cook up some silly excuse to get the carpet remnants. Honest me, just said oh let's tell the salesman the truth! As soon as we did, he said follow me ladies (her sister was along) and took us to about 10 stacks in the warehouse area. $1 for large pieces, 50 cents for smaller ones. Before long, the flip flops went sailing and she was trying about a dozen out, for feel. Rejecting anything with a short pile. It had to feel soft. LOL A female employee came back and asked if we were having fun.

When we paid for all of them, he told us customers have used fishing line and big sewing needles, hand sewing them together. You knot each loop as you go, keeping them together. I don't know how you'd sew them in the middle, when your design got bulky.

She opted for the duct tape. Much easier and we bought it already. We even bought a few remnants for here at home, at the foot of the stairs and garage.

I know these 2 months will fly by. I still don't know where summer went - you are right on that one!

K-Mart has their xmas tree section all up too! Yikes, we'll blink and it will be snowing!

I don't get a chance to enjoy the 'wonderful' Christmas displays going up all over the department stores. Oh well... I'll imagine it.

Nothing really has changed over here... Rotator planes are starting to slow down (September rotation period is coming to an end)... next rotator arena is January (time to go home!) We'll close up shop in the Transient Passenger Center at the end of the month and then I'll go back to the office. We'll have to go to the Pax Center about once a week for the weekly Patriot Express rotator planes. The last C130 arrived home on Tuesday.

A group of my Milwaukee buddies arrived here on Tuesday... it was nice to see them again. They made it safe and sound. As for our C130 planes, all returned home safely back to Milwaukee...

"On Tuesday, the last of the wing's eight C-130 planes, which have been rotating through the U.S. Central Command area that includes Iraq and Afghanistan, returned to the home base at Mitchell International Airport. On board were two dozen maintenance and air crews who have been serving at an air base in southwest Asia....The unit's commander, Col. Merle Hart, said the end of the 440th's Operation Iraqi Freedom deployment was not related to the base closings list. Hart also said despite the return of the C-130s, not all members of the unit's squadrons are home. About 85 people in the wing's 34th Aerial Port Squadron were activated in April for a year-long deployment and are overseas at several bases processing passengers and cargo." http://www.jsonline.com/news/metro/sep05/355565.asp
I am part of the 34th. I will not come back to Milwaukee until April. (I'll try to be back home in January for R & R leave)

LOOKEY WHAT THE CAT BROUGHT IN!!

Hugs hello to all of you!!

David has been on my heart and mind of late...and I thought I would take a peep in and see if I could find out how things might be going for him...

and check in with my old weather friends to see how everyone is doing :-)

it's been a lovely slice of time reading the posts and playing a game of catch up.

miss mary and karan, giant hugs to you gals, gosh I miss you both very much!! Nina is off to college...congrats to you mom, you've done a wonderful job with your girls I am sure that they will continue on the glorious path set before them! It's hard, one of the hardest things I think to let them go...but LOL..the apron string ALWAYS stays attached..I know I've checked! It becomes an elastic string though, plenty of room to stretch and the rebound to come right back to home where the love never ceases to catch them.

Quick update from my corner of the world..I'm back home now in Pa after a nine month stint in Mary's lovely Cincy! I fly out of JFK now, we've paid the dues and now can reap in the benefits of being based closer to home.Hey Rock, my home away from home was in Wilder KY..two of my bestest friends still live there!

The kids are doing wonderful...growing up and keeping us on our toes...as all children will do to their parents! :-)

I will check in more often, now that I am based in NY I am home for longer periods of time and now have a life that is not always 31k up in the sky!

Hellos and hugs again to all of you!! You have been missed but never far from my heart and mind!!

Love and blessings, Raine

ps... karan, whenever I have a cuppa earl I always think of you and granny...thanks for having the tea brewing!

raine!!!!

Indeed, look what the cat did drag in!!! A long lost, dear family member to many here at S2K (and our former TWC chat days).....we have so many new members Jackie, you'll just luv 'em like we do! S2K keeps growing and growing....

You were in my neck of the woods that long? Wow, didn't know it was for 9 months....again, so sorry we never hooked up. You emailed me right when a long term email friend turned on me, after 4 years and it really shook my world up. I have a very understanding and loving husband but he was ready to yank my whole internet world....he he. I've nothing to hide...anyone can look!!! he he But she was my friend one day, an enemy almost, the very next day. Don't worry, it's not someone we're all tight with here at S2K - thank goodness (in case any of you are wondering). Anywho, now that I have rebounded by that hurtful experience, I wish I had known you were still flying out of CVG. Dang......have your hours been cut short, b/c of Delta's bankruptcy situation?

I'll keep that image of elastic apron strings for a long time Jackie. That's a cute way to look at it - mine are stretched far these days but never severed.

Well, I just couldn't believe my eyes when I saw you had posted. I am going to spread the good news right now!!!!

Welcome ~home~ raine.....

Luv ya gal!

JACKIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's great to hear from you. I got choked up and teary eyed reading your post. It's been way too long. I know how busy things are and how hard it is to keep in touch but now that things have settled down, drop me an email or just pick up the darn phone and give me a call. I really miss hearing from you.

I think about those Grannies of our every time I have a cup of Earl Grey too. Awe heck, you know they're up there laughing and playing Yatzee.

BIG ((Hugs)) to you my friend. I'll brew a pot of Earl Grey and put out a plate of snickerdoodles for your return party.

Karan - we are kindred spirits, to borrow an Anne Shirley line from Anne of Green Gables! I teared up too when I saw a reply from raine on the Porch topic. Let's just as S2K was as slow as mollassess yesterday, her post gave me the patience I needed to send a reply. As I sat here, waiting and waiting, more gray hairs coming in just about, I thought now if this wasn't a reply to raine's post, I'd skip it. But it was raine and I HAD to stay with it. Eric hit submit 3 times on the other thread...he he

See there raine - you were sorely missed around here!!!!

Mine too! Nina and I read all 7 of her books, start to finish, when Nina was much younger. Then of course we've watched all 3 movies. Didn't quite care for the third one, since it strayed from the novel. I wanted more of Anne and Gil's marriage together and a baby on the way. Not Joy, that was sad. But her first that survived. Oh well, they went a completely different direction with that third movie didn't they?

Here's another....

We're having a Jonah Day down south aren't we? If I remember correctly....that's a bad day isn't it?

When life becomes too much to bear we'd pull out an Anne movie and lose ourselves.....after 9/11 we did that. But lately we haven't watched at all. I need an Anne day now...

Wait til Duckie sees this thread. She loves Anne too. But I'm sure she's evacuated by now...

Jackie - it's just so good to have ya back with us again!!!

Well, the Rains in Maine have been nothing like the floods in the bayous Raine, but it is SO good to see you stop by. I know we have kept loosely connected over the years via email exchanges that were slower than snail mail to return. But at least the "lines are open."

Nice to hear that you are working close to home. Still seems like a long way from Pen Argyl to the city, but I know you have family and 9/11 connections there that need tending to.

You and your family will be happy to know that stuffed Sinje has survived multiple trips through the washer and dryer, and three-year-old Emma still counts him among the best of friends. He has remained friendly and loyal and soft, so even sister Olivia is taking a liking to him.

I'll take the time to send off an email or IM this weekend, but for now, just posting here on the porch before we go inside by the stove in a few weeks.

Good Morning wx friends!!

If I had a webcam, it would be my pleasure to show you the smile on my face, it's a smile of joy, for being back in touch will all of you again.A blessing in my life to be sure!!

Karan...girl it has been way to long!! I was just in pburg four days ago..LOL..as I was closing the boarding door it broke and we went on a mechanical and the flight ended up cancelling. There was talk of just having us overnight and I was so upset as I would have for sure rang you phone, but alas I didn't have your number in my cell..erg! We ended up ferrying the plane back to base(JFK).I now have your number and everyone else's on my cell. :D The grannies, gosh I miss mine. We've been helping my mom move to her new apartment and amongst her things are things of Gram, pictures and such. One night we just sat and looked at the pictures, didn't get anything done, but it was bittersweet to sift through the memories.I come through pburg again on Saturday, it will be me waving like a goon from my plane at nothing...but the wave will be directed to you,LOL..only you and I will know that though! :D

Skyman, you give Emma a hug for me for taking such good care of Sinje, it's funny, that dog never liked a bath, but now, he seems to have taken to a washing like a trooper.Your grandbabies are growing up so fast...Emma three already, gosh it seems like yesterday when we were all waiting on word via email to her arrival in this world..give my hello's to your lady too!

NKU...ah yes, I do know exactly where that is rock. The area of KY that we are both familar with is a lovely area.Reminds me so much of home...LOL...I could never get used to though the fog in the morning, it was so dense at times. It was always a neat thing tho to see the cincy skyline on my drive back to the apartment.

Hugs hello to you Stephanie, VERY nice to see you again!! How are things in your corner of the north east? :D

It's a lovely day here in Pa...the evenings and mornings have been cool, excellent sleeping weather, which I am a champ at...and then the days warms up nicely under bright sunshine. No leaves turning yet, but I am sure the trees will be donning their fall clothes all too soon.Kind of sad to see the days of summer leaving but I cheer up and remember that once the trees have taken off fall colors that means that ole man winter will soon be knocking on the door and that means SNOW!! YAY!!

I'll make snowball for you skyman and give a good chuck west for you!

Take good care everyone, have a blessed day!!

Blessings,Raine

It is neat, that's for sure. I know what you're saying about the fog...when I come here mornings via I-275, especially after a heavy rain the day before, it's really bad because of the Licking River. It was bad this morning as a matter of fact.

Those little bugs, that as a child we were told "don't let the bed bugs bite" and we said, 'they won't bite you'. Well, truthfully speaking, my legs are littered in little red, itchy bumps. I went to the doc today and they pretty much stated it was either outside bug bites or bed bugs. Either way, all the hydrocortisone cream in the world can't help right now. Surprisingly, it is all over my legs and feet... nothing else. 85% of the bumps are on my feet.... oh yea, wearing boots itches like crazy. It feels like I'm wearing a cast.
