An Eye-Opening Poll

#1 Postby wxmann_91 » Mon Sep 26, 2005 7:44 pm

For reference:

I'm sorry if this is a stupid poll, but the beauty of tropical cyclones never ceased to amaze me and I had some spare time to create the graphic above. (Yeah I need a life.)

Feel free to explain why you chose the choice and/or post images.

Emily gave all those storms a run for there money. She had 153 knot flight level for a short time. So yes she was very close to them to. Thanks for the pics!!!

Wow, that’s really amazing. If you did not label the image for Katrina, I would have thought it was Isabel. It’s also interesting how they are all female hurricanes.

And my vote goes for Katrina.

Well... I thought all 3 had very impressive eyes... But it's pretty weird... In the picture of Katrina posted at the top, that CAN'T be the storm at its peak. Katrina's eye looked MUCH more impressive than that.

If I knew that Isabel would have such a good eye two years ago, I would've saved a batch of pics. How beautiful yet destructive.

If you want to see Katrina's eye at her peak, go to Christy's thread. Interesting about the female names, Isabel was female too. I have to say, they are all quite a beauty!!!

EDIT: Never mind, Christy posted her picture here. The sheer power of Mother Nature...

I still think that Franklin's "eye" beats them all. If anyone has a picture of that "eye", please post it as I don't have one right now.

I voted Rita. She looked just a little better at peak than Katrina, although Katrina was a beautiful annular hurricane. It was soo close. I voted Rita mostly because of her lower pressure.

Annular hurricanes with big eyes have a limit on their pressure, if they form in a perfect environment they can still only go so far if they don't replace their eyewalls again (sorta like that a cutoff low usually can't produce widespread severe wx outbreaks, a progressive pattern is more condusive).

Hurricanes that undergo ERC's and that have small, pinwheel eyes have no limit on how low they can go, as long as they are in a favorable environment they can strengthen after going through ERC's, and their pinwheel eye just increases the pressure gradient and the decreases the central pressure.

So it's up to you. I'd suggest don't base your decision on pressure/strength, but on beauty alone. Some prefer big, others small. In any rate, all of these hurricanes were very impressive.

I think Rita had the more perfectly formed eye, Kat's was still a little raggedy around the edges. Thats probably because she was annular. Regardless Katrina had a great eye, the most impressive I saw before Rita.
