This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

What is the latest date a hurricane has formed in the ATL.

#1 Postby JohnTK5 » Mon Sep 26, 2005 12:34 am

I know the WPAC has Typhoons in December still, but what about the Atlantic. What is the latest date a hurricane has formed in the Atlantic Basin, has there ever been a hurricane in the atlantic in december?

I know the season ends in November, but I am asking what is the latest date a hurricane has ever formed in the atlantic and what was it called.

Good question. The answer is December 30th.

If Hurricanes can form at the end of december why not extend the season to December.

Because the frequency of December storms are very low. Same reason why we don't extend the season to April or May. It's just rare.

Because out of season storms are very uncommon.

I believe a storm has formed in every single month of the calendar at some point over the years (perhaps there has been ONE month where it hasn't.) Can you imagine if the hurricane season was extended to 12 months? You'd have postings on this board in mid-February: "WHY ARE THE TROPICS SO DEAD???"

It would be amazing if the Atlantic Season was year round like the WPAC. Maybe even a good thing.

Hah! We had people saying that during this August... during what was an average August. (It ended up being slightly above normal)

If the Atlantic hurricane season was year round all the Gulf Coast residents would drop down on their knees and collapse on the floor. 6 months of rest from hurricane season isn't enough for many. Personally I'd just stop tracking cause it would get mundane and boring after awhile.

I'm a bit tired myself because this has been quite a year. Never seen anything like this in my life and now I don't really look foward for next year as the predict it to be same as this year and maybe even worse. :(

This season topped the '04 season. And before this, I had never seen anything like the '04 season.

Yes... and we are only a few years into it.

We still have at least 20 years left.

America would have no problem with storms from late Nov to late April because the waters would kill those storms so quickly. Gulf temps would be 65-70 in the Stream. Miami might be the only area, but shoot, that's really going out on a limb.

since 1998, we have had 5 storms that have either lasted into or formed during December, and since 2001, only 2002 did not have a December storm

we should try to find out why this is happening to decide if a 5-10 day extension is warranted (if it goes on for 5-10 more years, then maybe)
