Evacuating east on I-10 from Houston

#1 Postby txstorm » Thu Sep 22, 2005 12:23 pm

If you are going to head east on I-10 from Houston, let me give you a couple of work arounds. Right now, I-10 is a parking lot from LA border to Houston. If you can get to the Anahuac exit, take it and head south to Hwy 65. Go east on 65 and it deadends into Hwy 124 in Winnie/Stowell. Go north on 124 to Hwy 73 to Port Arthur. Stay on Hwy 73 for about 10 miles and turn left (north) on Labelle Rd. Labelle Rd dead ends into Hwy 124 in Beaumont (124 runs parellel to I-10).

I left Winnie at 11:00am and got to Beaumont by 11:20.

If you are trying to get to 96 or 69/287, instead of taking Labelle Rd all the way to 124, turn left on Frint Rd (about .25 miles past the land fill on the right or about 2 miles from Bayou Din Golf Course). Cross 124 and over the railroad tracks. This will put you on Major Drive in Beaumont. Stay on Major Dr till it dead ends. Turn right and Hwy 96/69/287 is about 1 mile.

Very thoughtful post.

Ok, probably dangerous, but the thought was nice.

Anyone know what it looks like from Houston to Dallas (Plano)? Husband's sister was to leave this morning from Bay City. I'm wondering if they've even made it to Houston.

I don't know that east is the greatest idea, given the way the guidance has been trending.

Houston traffic cams:

You may find useful info there. I don't know the geography, so I cant direct you to which cams might be most informative.

I would DEFINATELY NOT head east. They're reporting I-10 from Houston to Baton Rouge is EXTREMELY slow with a let up near Lafayette because some people are taking I-49 north. Then, I-12 east from Baton Rouge to Slidell is also extremely slow.

On WWL, the Louisiana Governor asked that NOBODY enter Louisiana
from Texas, nor anyone from Louisiana enter Texas. GO NORTH.
Do not go east towards the Katrina aftermath. Shelters in Monroe,
Shreveport, etc.

This is just my opinion, but evac to the east from Houston seems like a highly unadvisable proposition. At this point, it appears that taking roads other than the interstate may be the most prudent option, as long as you know where you are going. But west or northwest out of Houston looks to be the soundest strategy. Every 10 miles you go could have a significant impact on your personal safety.

Reports on KTRH 740 in Houston is, sometime this afternoon they are to start the contraflow of I-45 out of Houston. Then US59, 288, and finally I-10. In Beaumont they are already blocking west bound traffic on US90 so it looks like they'll set that up fairly soon.

Gov Perry and the Texas Dept Of Public Safety is going to catch a lot of grief over this. They have waited waaay tooo long to start the contraflow and have created havoc on the freeways out of Houston. I also understand that they are NOT going to contraflow US69/287 from Beaumont to Woodville, nor are they going to contraflow US96 from Beaumont to Jasper.

This is what happens when you elect an aggy as govenor

East is not the best choice right now, I pray we get these people off the road soon.

Just got a call from fellow S2Ker BC, and he says I-10 eastbound traffic flow in Hancock County is fine (steady but fine). And that there's a bunch of black clouds south of Diamondhead, moving west.

Just got to New Braunfels, took 14 hour, normally a 3.5 hour trip. traffic was bumper to bumper, with some no driving fools on the road. No gas, nowhere to stop, many people broken down or sleeping on the side of the road. It was a journey out of hell. You can reply to this if you would like, but, I wont be on until I can get regular internet access, I am at the local library right now and wanted to check in and let everyone know I am o.k.

God Speed and prayers to all

Those black clouds, looks like it is outer bands that are raining on New Orleans right now, at least according to a camera shot of downtown New Orleans on FNC.
