Houston Conditions?

#1 Postby simplyme » Thu Sep 22, 2005 7:34 am

Can anyone confirm...

Rumors of people sitting in traffic for 17 hours stuck, unable to get out of the city?

No gas available?

I-45 north is just about gridlocked going through and north of town. 290 going NW to Austin isn't much better. At a press conference around 7:00 this morning, TX DOT announced that they will run I-45 as a contra-flow north bound as soon as they can get the barricades up. 290 and I-10 will follow.

Yes, some people are running out of gas and overheating. Apparently some police patrols are carrying jerry cans and trying to keep everyone moving. There IS gas in Houston, but it is of course scarce along the evacuation routes.

My parents live in NW Houston and we have a camp in Central LA to where they are evacuating. They left at 3:30 this morning and I just talked to them at 8:00 and they were gridlocked on US 96 about 40 miles north of Beaumont. What's normally a 4.5 hour drive is taking them that long to get half way. They said gettin out of Houston wasn't bad but once they got around Liberty/Dayton on Hwy 90 it was terrible.

I have been listening to KHOU TV on http://www.khou.com and they have some pretty good local information. Dr. Frank is answering questions which may be helpful to some people.

I have a cousin on 290 heading out of town. Left at 130pm from s-ern Houston and as of 530am was only in ne-ern Houston. I'm glad they're going to begin contraflow soon.

I have friends who left Galveston @ 1:20PM and got here around 3AM - almost 12 hours to go 80 miles.

No gas ANYWHERE.

My oldest boy and his family took an early week flight up here from Richmond, TX. They have a brand new baby boy, and my wife and I were not going to let them take any chances. Besides, Grandpa and Grandma wanted to spend some time with our grandson.
