I donated to Salvation Army too
and I also donated to the Humane Society.
I wish I could do more.
I took this from another BB
I hope the orignal poster doesn't mind.
I fel it is worthwhile reepeating ehre.
He is from Texas and he says:
"'m normally on the BVI board but unfortunately can confirm first hand about the Red Cross working a certified shelter for the last week that is now closed...the red cross provided a few signs, forms, limited supervision, some stupid rules such as we could not give out clothing, a 73 year old counselor who was deaf and 80 cots (We housed over 300 and helped over 1500 and continue to do so)...the money came from our church and the community and the red cross took the credit (Not that we cared). I can honestly say it only confirmed my prior experience of the primary mission of the red cross is like many NGO's to make payroll first for its full time employees. I'm not sure what they will doing with all the cash..."

Our city hosted a 7 TV channel telethon last week and all proceeds went directly to the Red Cross, for hurricane relief. The phone lines were continually jammed. I could not get thru.
Then a family displaced from NO has moved to my community. A daughter from this family will be going to my daughter Laura's HS. We are now donating to this family.
I think it was now a good thing those phone lines were jammed. If I had to choose a charity today, it would be the Salvation Army.

Sorry Shawn...don't mean to cause trouble. In our case, we are honored to donate to a family, who lost everything. Their father was missing for a while but they found him, thankfully. The family is back together and possible here in town already. I almost donated to the Red Cross last week. Not saying I never will, but right now this is what our family is doing.

Well, since we're all going on the record, two reasons why I don't donate money to the SA.
1) I've seen the dinky Salvation Army shelters for homeless and then I've seen the staff retreat at Camp Hoblitzelle, with the horses, big lake, huge meeting hall, church, rec center, and dining hall (each with state of the art sound systems):

2) In order to stay and eat at an SA shelter (at least, in non-disaster situations), one must attend their church services on Sunday mornings, Sunday nights, and Wednesday nights. THEIR services. If you can fit it into the schedule, you can also go to the church of your choice. But bringing a church bulletin, program, or missalette does not excuse one from attending their service also. In other words, going to fellowship at your own church is not good enough for them. They are their own religion and you, as an American, do not have freedom of religion as far as they are concerned. I have nothing against their faith or their religion. But to deny someone their freedom of religion is, IMO, spiritual abuse.
