Surge Footage?
Is there any Katrina storm surge footage out there? I have a hard time believing that with all of the chasers and tv crews, not one was able to be on a balcony somewhere and let us see such a historical surge. No, I am not morbid, I think there is a lot to be learned in such cases. I know it was a cat 4, but one would think someone has footage.

Well, I don't have many surge videos (only a few, most of them are wind videos), but here are all the chaser sites I've gathered that have video from Katrina.

I believe there was an excellent amount of footage made by an individual in or near the Slidell region as well... scary stuff, wish I could find the link again. Perhaps Pearl River could dig it up for us, I recall he supplied it once on another thread, many moons ago.

It never made it to the web, but there was some chilling home video footage shot by a resident of Chalmette, LA (St. Bernard Parish) -- in his recently remodeled two story house –– that dramatically captured the sudden rush and rise of Katrina's storm surge into his home as it inundated his neighborhood. Notable is the fact that it was a two story house with one of those grand staircase entrances, so the homeowner was able to retreat up to the second floor as the water surrounded, then began to inundate, then entirely submerge, the entire first floor of his home. I recall that he and his wife were later rescued by boat from the flooded home and evac'd to Baton Rouge.
The video was broadcast several times on Baton Rouge station WAFB during the first couple of days after Katrina made landfall, but after that I never saw it again. Too bad, because I think it would be an unforgettable wake up call to anyone foolhardy enough to consider sticking around in an area susceptible to the effects of hurricane storm surge.

Andrew '92, Katrina '05, Gustav '08, Isaac '12, Ida '21...and countless other lesser landfalling storms whose names have been eclipsed by "The Big Ones".

I think I may have seen that one, or at least one made in St. Bernard... it was grisly, however as there were pictures where one could see bodies in the water. The one I recall of St. Bernard was taken at the community center, or some such place, and you could see the water rushing in, and then he panned across to the water levels as they rose until Wal-Mart and other recognizable features became little more than islands in a sea of surge.

Okay I found ONE of the St. Bernard videos, it's like 28 minutes but be "WARNED" that if you watch it beyond the 11 minute point, you will see bodies in the water/debris. The first 10 minutes are mostly about how the parish feels it was completely overlooked by the national media (justifiably, in my opinion considering the entire parish was all but wiped out), and the quality of the video leaves a bit much to be desired (you might want to up the volume as at least on my machine it was not easy to hear clearly). But you can note in the first two-three minutes just some storm video, (they clearly had many lapses in-between photographic sessions) and it's from the St. Bernard Government Complex, off Judge Perez Dr., in Chalmette. It's not the one spoken of above by BayouVenteux, but it's pretty impressive as you start noticing the water moving in around the 4 minute mark, From there on you see a lot of scenes of water inundating the area, (including shots of a nearby Wal-Mart and Popeyes where all you see are the roofs). These people started on the first floor of the complex, and were soon enough forced to the second, and ultimately rescued from the roof--after which they took many other shots from around the area. I would NOT recommend watching it once you get past the 10 minute point, as by then the water has receded (several days later) and it's interspersed with some fairly disturbing shots of bodies in the water/debris. (No it's really not anything badly decomposed or that gross--but the sight of them can be quite disturbing.) The one of the old guy in the wheelchair I believe was on national media. Just a reminder--stop at 11 min. unless you wish to see these disturbing shots.

I've seen one, Louisiana, I believe--where the guy was hanging out of his attic ladder door to take footage. Crazy.
The other one of surge taken from the Beau Rivage can be seen here: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid ... 8928173924
