Northwest Atlantic WV Loop (Ophelia)

#1 Postby Frank2 » Fri Sep 09, 2005 8:13 am

Ophelia's motion over the past 24 hours is very evident in this loop - also notice the trough digging southeastward towards the system.

Some here became upset with me yesterday when I mentioned the possibility the Ophelia might follow in Nate's wake (incidentially, note Nate's substantial weakening this morning), but, looking at this loop, the possibility does seem to exist.

looks to me like the dry air is being pushed away from the system and soon won't even be a factor!

There is a dry slot that has moved northeast of Ophelia, but, there is still dry air associated with the trough that is advancing quickly southeast towards the system.

Looking at the above loop a few minutes ago, a dry wedge of air that marks the leading edge of the southeastward-diving trough seems to be only several hours northwest of Ophelia - we'll see if this makes a difference, since this dry wedge has been intensfying over the past several hours.

Hmm...it may briefly hinder Ophelia...however, it looks like Ophelia is deepening now, back into a hurricane. All in all...I don't think this will have much impact. As a matter of fact...the radar looks a little dangerous to me. Ophelia has gotten much better organized.

Let's hope that this is an example of good timing...

Floyd,

FL winds have reduced slightly, though aircraft radar does show a very nice SW quad to the storm

It also is likely to encounter strong shear from the UL approaching to the east.

Looks like 36 hours of some hostile conditions, then conditions should improve

Ah - you must be referring to the upper low just northwest of Puerto Rico at this time...

Frank

P.S. Any comments on the dry wedge/trough approaching Ophelia from the northwest, since it seems to be deepening a bit?

Looks like Opelia is going to be the baloney portion of a upper-level sandwich...

Per Derek's post above:

It's also likely to encounter strong shear from the UL approaching [from] the east.

Yea...but it's strengthening right now. It may become a hurricane again....stay status quo, then deepen after 24-36 hours.

Had to read your post twice to make the connection, but, yes, I agree...

Here is another WV view of the current situation - slugs of dry air are seen dropping southward to the west of Ophelia, while the ULL approaching the southeast Bahamas can be seen in the lower right-hand corner of the photo.

Click on http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/TROP/DATA/RT ... -loop.html to view.

As Derek Ott said earlier, some hostile conditions for at least the next day or two.
