no that is not true. From about Sarasota south along the west coast gets hit frequently when we are in an active period in the Atlantic as we are in now.
Your highest chances of getting hit are in September and especially October.

Tampa bay area has been lucky as heck. We miss the big ones thankfully.
Unfortunately other ppl in other places get hit when they miss us.
Last year charley and ivan missed us.
Dennis missed. Katrina did not go up the coast like some of the models said. Now Ophelia is pulling away.
But we do get a lot of storms in weakened states.
Jeanne, Frances gusts to hurricane force; same with gordon 2000 and gabrielle 2001. 30-40 mph gusty winds from Henri 03, harvey 99, mitch 98, josephine 96; erin and jerry 95.
Charley brought some gusty winds as it passed by.
We have dodged the big ones.
The day we get hit is the day my home's first floor gets screwed by
bay flooding if a big one comes.
When Charley was threatening I was really afraid for example.

You'll get a different read on our area. Of course, we're on the so-called "past due" list like Tampa is and New Orleans was.
From what I understand our area Port St Lucie had not been hit in many years and then we got hit 2 times in 3 weeks

In 1848 Tampa Bay was hit directly by 2 major hurricanes within 3 weeks.
One hit around early september as cat 4 or 5. The next hit late september as cat 3 or 4 or 5, One flooded the bay, one drained it
Not sure which did which
but I saw some documentary several years ago on these 2 big hits.
Then in 1921 a Major Cane hit as cat 3. Then in 1940s some intense
canes passed just offshore.
In 1960 or something a strong one hit.
Since then we have been really lucky.

Unfortunately there will be a time a major hurricane will hit Tampa Bay. The surge from the bay will flood all of South Tampa and low lying areas of Pinellas County (St. Pete/Clearwater) will be wiped out. It's going to happen at some point. The question is when?
The amount of damage could be as much as New Orleans

I am in St. Petersburg, the northeast part of it, right near the bay.
Very close to shore acres. A few miles north of the St.Pete Pier.

That is correct. Some of the models the Emergency Management folks have used up there said that a Charley could have pushed a 6 ft. surge as deep as I-75 in Hillsborough County.
Ybor City would of course be way under water as well as most of Downtown and Davis Island (as usual).

boca_chris wrote:Boca-Chris I just read an article about that very subject. It was talking about Tampa being overdue and how horrible it would be today with the population and growth of the area.
Do you have the article? I'd like to give it a read through.
I will see if I can find it Hopefully I bookmarked it
