#1 Postby TampaFl » Fri Sep 02, 2005 8:39 pm

Due to Hurricane Katrina, the NDBC is down according to there home page   . Hope they get it back on line soon. Thoughts and comments welcomed.

National Data Buoy Center Temporary Page
As a result of Hurricane Katrina, the Buoy, C-MAN, Ship, and Drifting Buoy Observations via http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov are unavailable.

The National Data Buoy Center has been evacuated and communications lines remain down. The extent of damage to the facilities and equipment is not fully known at the present time.

Alternative sites for Buoy and C-MAN data inlcude:

National Ocean Service nowCOAST web mapping portal
NOAA's Forecast Systems Laboratory MADIS Site
To obtain buoy and C-MAN data from the MADIS site at http://www-frd.fsl.noaa.gov/mesonet/, please do the following:
Click on Show/Hide Data
Hit Clear
Highlight "Maritime" and "NOS-NWLON" and "NOS-PORTS" from the pick list of observations and then click Redisplay
At that point, click on the wind barb for the buoy, C-MAN, or other NOAA coastal station to get the data from the station you are interested in
The webpages of several coastal Weather Forecast Offices http://www.nws.noaa.gov/om/marine/marine_map.htm also provide some buoy data
As additional information on the status of the NDBC site becomes available, we will make updates to this page.

Probably no communications, power problems. I believe they're located on the MS coast. New Orleans NWS is down too.
