Two hurricanes at once side by side?

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Two hurricanes at once side by side?

#1 Postby scostorms » Thu Sep 01, 2005 1:28 pm

I saw not to far back that two typhoons in the west Pacific were travelling side by side towards Japan. My question is, how likely is this to occur in the Atlantic? I have not heard such a thing occuring in the past, but it has been on my mind since I heard first word.

They wouldn't travel close together. It's not possible. The outflow from one would kill the other one if it ever got that far...

Well I would imagine "close" is a relative term. Remember the pacific is huge compared with the atlantic. I could be wrong here but if I recall the pictures of the 2 storms you speak of , if you put one in the bahamas the other would be right off africa.

They were a good space apart, Typhoon Mawar and some other one, but they were both going in the same direction and both about the same size... Here it is...

The WPAC had two typhoons a couple of days ago... one near Taiwan and the other a little north of Guam. That's about 1,600 miles. That's the same distance as having a storm in the Western Gulf(say near Texas) and one 400 miles west of Bermuda. That's not that unusual... and could happen in the Atlantic(and has before).

The Taiwan storm was headed for Taiwan and China.. the one near Guam is headed for Japan.
