Any hurricane 'fans' left???? Sobering poll hopefully!
I for one after wanting to come eye to eye with a hurricane for about 20+ years can say "may they all be fish for the rest of my life"! What was I thinking or was I drunk or high for the past 20 years?! After seeing a disaster comparable or even topping 9/11 in terms of death/destruction I ask members: Are you still a hurricane fan? I know my nick is misleading in asking this

So if theres no one that wents to watch hurricanes. Whats the need of the board? Katrina was a very bad storm, in I hope it never happens again. It was very sad. In I knew she would be a very bad storm because she was like Mitch. But I will still likely watch storms/cyclones...Even so its kind of a wake up call.
I knew this kind of hurricane would happen some day. Over the last few years it has been Charleys or Andrews compacted systems of cat4 or higher. But never a Mitch like storm with hurricane force winds of more then 105 miles. This thing moved into coast with surge of a 175 mph hurricane. In with winds of 145 to 150 mph. With higher gust. This thing was a monster. Waves on the buoys shown 45 feet!!!

Oh, Im still interrested in hurricanes scientifically, but am farther away from ever -removed- than I ever was. Instead of hoping I get to see some 'action', I am onboard tracking and hoping they dont affect me or nobody else, unfortunately, THIS SEASON we will probably see another landfall somewhere but I can still hope we dont.

Having been through a high Cat 4 cyclone which was 10 degrees across, @ 925 mb (measured at landfall a few miles away) and moved over at only 6 knots per hour when just turned 6 years old, I can say that day coloured my outlook on life.
My family lived, but just barely. I couldn’t swim, though I made a point to learn how when we went to the beach the following weekend after the storm passed. The storm was incredibly beautiful, in that way which can’t be captured in words. At the time I was simply fascinated and transfixed by it, especially the sound, which made you disappear into nothingness. It made all surrounding structures vibrate and shudder with unrestrained ferocity and overwhelming violence. There was no time to be afraid of it, in the slightest, while it was occurring. I just soaked it in sensately until I passed out after about 6 hours of it.
It taught valuable lasting lessons, both during and after, in a hundred different ways.
I don’t resent such storms though I sure do dread them, and have been through a few other much weaker cyclones since which were somehow a lot more terrifying than the first one because now I thinking about it a lot before, during and after it, and expect the worst and plan for the best. A cliché, but very true.
I don’t want them, ever. Never wanted one.
But I also know they are also not an optional extra, when I want to enjoy living in this choice part of the world.
I didn’t vote because they aren’t optional, they are a part of my life.

Well, I used to be one, until S2K member GulfBreezer/Sandi lost her entire home last year. I began to look at following hurricanes differently. With interest but never wanting them to form or strike heavily populated areas (not that I ever did to begin with).
And now NOLA and other cities devastated by this force of nature, and well, I'm just about to stop following them altogether. The excitement, for lace of a better word, is just GONE.
Another S2K member sunny/Cindy lost everything this time, with Katrina. So that's a double whammy for me.
My heart is broken for their losses, lives and homes. It's all so sad. I'm ready for Fall and Winter.

I want children in the future to have to look up the word "landfall" in the dictionary, ask us "Where were you when...," see movies about them, and be able to comment, "Wow! I hope it never happens in my lifetime!" I'd like them to be able to watch many, many fish storms in awe...and from a distance.

I've never understood over the years the people who come to these boards and start cheerleading for storms to start forming or for "action" when there is none. I wish I had a dime for every post I read from somebody who was whining because the Gulf of Mexico didn't have any "action" and was "boring."
I always chalked these posts up to ignorance and immaturity. If they had homes or families in harm's way they'd feel differently, because they would then equate "action" with death and destruction like thinking people do.

I never have understood the fuss over "-removed-". I could stand on my roof and scream at the sky, "bring it on " or "no more, no more" and have absolutely no impact whatsoever. What I would like or not like with regard to an approaching storm is irrevelant.
Knowledge and understanding of what we may face in order to make wise decisions are the only important issues.
As far as personal "-removed-"... I neither "want" nor "don't want". I assume EVERY storm is heading directly for me at first and prepare accordingly. Storms like Katrina only make my resolve to never be caught off guard even stronger.

I don't want to what happen in Katrina, I feel for those people and wish I could help in some way. I know living on the east coast of nc that we will get ours here someday, we have had some but nothing l ike that here for me in land from floyd it flooded real bad, but again i was not in that part. i got the winds, i'm trying hard not be fasanated with stroms its hard when you have been interested in weather all your like i actually saw my first water spout this past weekend, and was able to call into our nws station for a warning, im a trained county weathere spotter and i want to do more to help people i want to get involved with the red cross or some other agency that helps people in times like this. I think that is the chance that this storm has made in my life to care more about people in need, and i will do something with that. We all need to get involved at this time cause we are some point in time going to need the help of others in community.

I stopped being a "fan" after going through the bad side of Cat 3 Andrew in Louisiana. Sure I like to track them -- but that's all.
Katrina destroying lives and property VERY VERY VERY close to home puts icing on the cake.

Wanting to see/meet a hurricane does not mean I want a Cat. 4 or 5 on my doorstep. I, unfortunately, was not in town when Katrina made her debut here in S. FL, and that's about all I'd want to come face-to-face with. So, yes, I voted that I would like to see one still, but with the caveat that it's just a baby Cat. 1 storm, please.

Opel in 1995 was bad but then again I lived in Atlanta and only experienced Cat 1 conditions
Georges was pretty bad as I was in a 4 story hotel in Dothan, AL again Cat 1(I think it was Georges? It was the one that was suposed to hit New Orleans then Pensacola and finally went in at Panama City around 1998)
Now that I have lived near the coast since 1996 I have been hit hard three times in less than one year. If I lived on the water I would move out to the Country like I do now. Hurricanes are only fun if you are not where they hit. Big ones like Ivan and Katrina can take you out even if you live hundreds of miles away.
Hurricanes suck and I hope the NCAA makes the Miami Hurricanes change their name as I personally find it offensive.

There are still 14 votes from "sickies." Bring it on types are thrill seekers---let them play Russian Roulette with a loaded 9 MM with one round in it. The need for message boards like this is to stay informed. I ever meet a disaster wisher, and I'd be happy to show him what the fruits of his wishes are.

As I've posted before, weather is a guilty passion.
Trust me, so many people here (and I admit me too) secretly wish for a Cat 5. No, I don't want to see destruction, but a Cat 5 is such a rare event, and they are so beautiful in many ways. That's why so many people here loathe breaks; they just want to see action and images like these:
One wonders, how can such a beautiful creature be so deadly? And sometimes people actually live for action, or want to just experience one for themselves (though I don't think this way).
This is just what I think, really this thread is for psycholigists to examine.

Can't play Russian Roulette with a 9mm...it's got a clip...and the first shot will be your last. Maybe a .454...
