One thought I have been having seeing this looting is what would have happened if the storms effect had been worse? With the right "wobble" New Orleans might be experiencing a catastrophe. Then what to what levels would some people have sunk/risen?

Why should we speculate about that? Isn't there enough actual destruction to fill your mind?

Your preaching to the choir here. My family and I have lived in the far eastern quadrant of the WV panhandle for almost 20 months now.. 5-10 minutes form the MD border. I am 46 old and I had previously lived in MD my whole adult life.

Why this area?

Well we do not have to hardly deal with tornadoes... we could get floods from hurricanes every once in a while but no bad floods where I lived... away from the Potomac River .. ... and no earthquakes...as of yet at least.

But I will pass on judging why people live where they do. There are a million of reasons why they have chosen this area and most people should know this.

I do not think that anyone who is kind enough to go and try and help these people should lose their life over their possible ignorance...but I also find it hard to believe that these good hearted people are willing to risk their lives if they honestly thought that most of these people made stupid unjustfied decisons. These are just good hearted people trying to help others in dire need.

I think many people on this board are very overwhelmed by this event just like most americans are but they know more about the weather. So I think this makes them more angry that so many people ended up staying there. It's like they were shouting from a mountain top but nobody was listening. And this is showing up in the comments. Just my opinion.

Are there some more specific reports coming in at all. If it is rising in one place it could just be drainage from a higher location. Is the levee water still flooding into the city?

from the looks of the pic it was the canal breach causing the flooding....but the breach was a LONG way (several miles) from the skyline of Nola but you could see the path of the water from the before and after.

I am under the impression that the levee water is still flooding the city and it is rising but I am not 100 % sure. I will pass along new info if I find out defintely. These were earlier comments within the past 60-90 mintues.

On the subject of looting in the interview with the mayor last night, he said that some people were even breaking into pharmacies. He stated that drug addicts who had been without their drugs for a day or two are probably getting edgy and breaking in to find whatever drugs they can get their hands on. Also I am sure some of the people who are stealing electronics, clothes etc. might also be selling them later for drugs. As a professional who has dealt with drug addicts I know they will sell anything to get their next fix unfortunately. In fact they could get desperate enough to do anything if they are in withdraw. Now I am not saying all the looters are doing this but those who are addicted most likely are at this point. It is a good thing they have declared martial law. It is and will be sorely needed.

That's what I'm asking, now in 2 threads, and can't get an answer. I'm not nearly as concerned about the looting right now as this. The looting isn't killing anybody right now; the flooding is.

From what it sounds like on CNN, it's still getting flooded. They don't know that much either, so please be patient when waiting for info.

from the apparent breach location, even after it was sealed completely i think waters would rise in the downtown area for many hours....the breach was several miles away and the water already past the breach would still drain to the lower part of the city.

Hubby and I were just talking about the looters. We actually have some sympathy for the ones stealing FOOD. If there houses are gone they have no food. Help can't get in to them. How else are they going to survive? Hubby said if he was in their shoes he would do the same thing. The ones that are stealing material things ought to be arrested and the book thrown at them. (TV's, stereos, etc....) I feel for these people. I seen video with a older woman carrying food that won't perish. The one's stealing frozen food aren't to bright. But maybe there are some that will eat frozen pizza. First time I ever thought I would have sympathy for some looters. Debbie

How about we try some pity for those looters? They must have NO IDEA what's happening to their city.

If what I'm reading here on this forum is correct, the last thing they need to be worried about is scoring a free tv. They'll likely never get to watch that TV or even eat much of that food.

...And honestly, the last thing the store owners may be worried about tomorrow is stolen inventory.

You have got to be kidding me!!!! Pity? There's going to be food pouring in with relief efforts. These people are not sweet, put-upon, down on their luck po' folks. They're criminals and the dregs of society who'll loot more than just food. They're not going to just loot stores. Soon it'll be homes and victimizing others who've got enough on their plate already.
