Evac New Orleans NOW!!
This is beginning to become much more dangerous than anyone could possibly imagine. Fires are increasingly breaking out, the contiamation is much more visible on the morning aerials, etc....
Instead of trying to get relief supplies into New Orleans, IMO we need to start getting these people out, be it by air evac or boat and then deal with getting New Orleans back to inhabitable, which may be months.

Sobering from WWL -- when the local news evacuates, you know it's bad
Levee breaches are causing rising water in New Orleans. WWL-TV studios are being evacuated due to rising water in the French Quarter. WWL will begin broadcasting from LSU as soon as possible and we will be attempting to stream on the web.

Sadly right now there is no way to get out or in. The twin span going east is destroyed. 1-10 going west is under water. The Causeway while fine is not an option because the path to it is underwater.. Im not sure about Huey P long bridge or the Crecent City Connection. A boat may be the only option right now. Alot of people did get out including me. However there is no major transportation method out of the city and there are alot of poor people in New Orleans. Some just hard headed.

The Times Picayune reports that WEST is an option, that the Crescent City Connection IS passable.

Only way out of New Orleans is West
The only way people can leave the city of New Orleans is to get on Crescent City Connection, head to the West Bank and take Highway 90 to Interstate 310 or I-10 on to Lafayette, authorities said this morning.
Interstate-10 eastbound, toward Slidell and the Gulf Coast, can't be traveled. Several sections of the Twin Spans have washed away and other sections of the bridge are structurally unsound.
The Lake Pontchartrain Causeway has been opened to police, fire and other emergency vehicles after an initial inspection concluded the 24-mile long bridge was sound, WWL Radio reported this morning.
No other vehicles will be allowed on the bridge; and access to St. Tammany Parish remains restricted. The condition of U.S. Highway 11 across the Lake is not known.

Before it gets even worse, it would make sense to airlift people out of the Superdome and other shelters to shelters elsewhere in the US. If they only airlifted out people who wanted to go, that would reduce the number of people in that and other shelters and it would seem practical.
The more people they can get out of the area, the better, it would seem. It would make sense to try to do that.
A system of "satellite shelters" would make a bunch of sense. And perhaps some of the people in the shelters are just people who were caught in New Orleans by the storm (e.g. all the people stranded at the airport) and want to be out of there anyway. Students from other parts of the country, etc. could be airlifted out. People with relatives in other parts of the country who want to leave could be airlifted out.
It seems that if you could reduce the shelter population by 30% or so, that would be 30% fewer people to have to deal with in those shelters. And the percentage who would be willing to leave might be far higher.

I saw that.. The westbank is an option but only for those that are near the river. Which doesnt appear as flooded near the Huey P bridge.. However for those in the 9th ward or kenner and metairie I dont know how they can get there. There are ferry boats that are used to cross the river if they are usable and that may be an option.

If anyone can remember and maybe Duckie could help with her searching skills. Someone in one of the threads from early in the morning when we were discussing the levee breaks explained about the threat once fires started and how they would almost spread without anyway to control them.
I think the member's name was "Oklahoma weather"....

hhmm All I can think of is Military Engineers. They have those bridge builders.......Can set up temp bridges for military vehicles......why not for evacuating??? 5 ton trucks. deuce and 1/2s, chinooks, you name it.....At this point, I would think the majority of NO and surrounding areas will have to be evacuated at this point.
