Kudos to CNN for following this situation. The rest of the news channels gave a false sense of security, didn't take the time to educate themselves about the unique situation in New Orleans. Now, people in the most densely poulated areas in the city are being suprised by a wall of water. As far as I'm concerned, blood is on their hands. Sorry, I'm just so sick right now.

Think of two street blocks in your neighborhood. Your street and the one behind you. That's how wide it is.

In the levee system that prevents floods in Nola.. I changed the topic title for more clarity.

"... a levee holding back the waters of Lake Pontchartrain has reportedly sustained a breach two blocks long in the Lakefront area of New Orleans.

The breach has triggered rapidly rising floodwaters in the city's downtown and prompted at least one hospital to evacuate patients by air."

Very simply, the wall that was protecting the center of the city and the French Quarter from catastrophic flooding has broken. The hole in that wall is 2 blocks wide... perhaps 600 yards.

ahh okay, so a breach is a hole? That's the part that confused me. That's just awful. I keep hoping that this is all just a bad dream.

Let's hope we don't get anymore landfalling hurricanes this year.

They just changed it to a 200 foot breach and not a 2 block breach. I just wonder how easy these things are to close up?

thanx so much for the visuals. It actually helps alot. This doesn't to be making headlines very quickly. I wonder if it's it not as bad as they say??? You think this would be on every channel by now.

It's the middle of the night; the newspapers are on the streets already and even the 24-hour news channels' staffs are mostly in bed.

It was just reported on CNN that the water from the breach is rising as much as 1 foot per hour. Dear God.

The wind out of the west behind Katrina temporarily lowered the water level of the lake last night.

This morning the lake is rising again and the runoff coming down the Mississippi river combined with the high tide is making things worse.

The breach occurred near the 17th street canal which appears to have some earthen levee that was only 10 feet high.

Sounds as though the levee is washed out more than a foot below the lake level at MHT.

This is going to take a long time to fix.

So these breaches, was it because Lake Ponchartrain overflowed from the amount of rain? Slidell, did they have a levee or are they below ground?
