No he wasn't. Do you know what the definition of casualty is? Obviously not. I've only heard the word casualty used when someone is injured or dead.

IMO that estimate is not a bit exaggerated. The death toll from this will be staggering IMO. I hope that I am completly and utterly wrong in this case. I really do.. Tommorow we will all witteness the distruction of this storm. The worst places will be accessed and they might not find anything. A casualty means death. The numbers might be lowered when the final toll is tallied. I sure hope so

You have to think this is going to be a very long term event. I think in the end ... Heat stress, and disease will be the biggest killer

I doubt it will be that high, but a toll over 1,000 would not surprise me, especially with the levee breaks in NO and no way to warn people about them with no electricity anywhere unless you are on a generator.

I'm making guesses based on previous Red Cross estimates of what the doomsday scenario would do (25k-100k) and the causulty rate during the Galveston hurricane (21%).

I think the causulties will be lower than previous estimates because people did get out in large numbers, and many who stayed got to high ground. Also, the wind damage wasn't as great as predicted. But never the less, 20% of 385,000 people stayed behind in Orleans parish alone, and floods kill.

I would not be surprised if the number of deaths is high. In GulfPort they know of at least 50 dead and that is probably just the beginning there. the govenor of Mississippi is concerned because alot of people didn't evacuate

Two block long breach of the levee near the New Orleans Business District, by the 17th Street Canal.

It's flooding badly and this is just the start. Remember, we still haven't seen anything conclusive from SW Mississippi yet.

are the deaths caused from tornadoes spawned by the hurricane included in the official count? and then what about after the hurricane? does the count include all the disease to follow?

I havent seen anything on Cnn.com about 1000 to 2000... I believe the count online is at 65...

any damage estimates yet?

It's not like we're proud of carrying the title of "site of the deadliest natural disaster in US history." But I hope that nothing ever surpasses the 1900 Storm in terms of the number dead. I pray that many of those who stay behind survived by vertical evacuation or some other miraculous means.

MSNBC is reporting 30 of the dead were in a Biloxi apartment complex that collapsed...

The 17th street canal is nowhere near the business district. The breach is 5-6 miles from downtown in the very northwestern corner of Orleans Parish so if you think the flooding in the CBD is bad, imagine the residency zones actually near the breach.
