Flooding in Gulf Shores, AL as bad as Ivan

#1 Postby logybogy » Mon Aug 29, 2005 5:59 pm

GULF SHORES, Ala. (AP) - Hurricane Katrina is pounding Alabama's most popular beaches with stinging rain and powerful wind gusts that pushed Gulf waters into streets in a rising storm surge.

Gulf Shores and Orange Beach both resemble ghost towns today as the storm roared ashore in Louisiana around 5 a-m.

Flooding is the worst in Gulf Shores. Police Chief Arthur Bourne said the water is as high as it was during Hurricane Ivan a year ago, meaning it could be days before homeowners get in to assess damage and begin cleaning up.

Jude,

I am from Foley, rode the storm out here. Many tree limbs and power lines down, a few buildings had major roof damage. The wind got up to about 50-60 with gusts of as much as 80. I lost a section of shingles about four feet square. I saw mature pecan trees bent half way to the ground. It was an incredible display considering we are about 125 miles from NO. The flooding in Gulf Shores and Bon Secour is worse than in Ivan, actually a good bit worse in some areas. (The eye of Ivan went directly over my house) I remember when Camille hit, and Katrina was much worse here in Foley. Power is going to be out for a couple days, but I feel fortunate after hearing and seeing what happened in LA and MS.
I am praying for those people, and hope all of those who can will help in some way.
