Building collapse reported, possible victims

Building collapse reported on Laurel near Washington in the Garden District . . . possibly with people inside. Emergency workers trying to see if they can get a National Guard deuce-and-a-half to get through the storm for possible rescue.

Fox TV is reporting a Hotel collapse in Harvey,La. People trapped,rescue folks unable to respond. Very bad.

St. Bernard Parish spokesman Larry Ingargiola says the parish's two shelters at Chalmette High and St. Bernard High are suffering major damage. He said Chalmette High shelter is losing its roof, and St. Bernard High has plenty of broken windows and glass.

TV up here (Cape Cod, MA) showed collapsed brick building--identified as a "hotel" in the "French Quarter." Huge pile of bricks--looks like 3-4 story building. But from picture it does not look as if the whole building collapsed, but rather that the back (?) wall fell down.... so if people were inside they might well be okay.

This picture is also on the Fox news home page (along with a few other interesting pictures from the French Quarter, inside the Superdome, etc). It looks like just one wall of an old brick building which collapsed on some cars. It doesn't look like people were trapped unless they were inside those cars, which I doubt.

I believe 9th ward is a very poor part of town. Wouldn't be surprised if not everyone was able to leave their homes, housing projects. Will be interesting to see what reports come out of there when we can get people in there. I believe Besty in also put 9th ward under 8-10ft of water when she came through.

Yes, this is correct. The 9th Ward is a very poor section of the city, although offhand I don't know of any major housing projects there. The 9th Ward and adjacent sections of St. Bernard Parish flooded heavily during Betsy. There were conspiracy theories at that time that gates were opened on the Industrial Canal Levees deliberately to release water into those areas and save the Central sections of New Orleans from flooding.

My in-laws lost everything they owned in Betsy, and there is some possibility this has happened to them again if floodwaters reached their home in Chalmette.
