This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

How will this affect commercial flights?

#1 Postby nolabelplez » Mon Aug 29, 2005 6:44 am

My DH is supposed to fly today from Florida to Dallas, with a layover in Atlanta. His biggest worry is that he will get to Atlanta and get stuck.
Will they fly over this thing? Will they reroute?

Simply put, yes. Delayed at best. Atlanta has delays on a normal day.

Yes, there will be delays? Or yes, they will fly over the top of this thing?

You cannot fly over the top of any storm with tops 30-50,000 ft. Yes your husband will be delayed, if not have his flight outright cancelled as the storm moves thru. SW Georgia already getting feeder bands from this storm.

Thanks,
I can't get a straight answer from the airline. I've been trying to google it, but I get a lot of irrelevant answers.

Maybe not the right time for humor (or maybe we all need it), but this is what I got when I searched "commercial flights through hurricane":

"Hurricane Travel
Visiting Hurricane? Compare Hotel Prices & Reviews"

If you're in the path of this thing, stay safe.

I have had to travel on a hurricane day before. Even though the flight was not going through or near it, it was cancelled because the airplane that was scheduled to fly me out was grounded because of the storm.

Planes whose routes normally take them right through the storm will take slightly longer to get where they're going, to avoid the storm. Minor delays may occur, but generally unless you're flying into an area being directly affected, it won't be a big deal.

You can monitor flight delays at this FAA site:

http://www.fly.faa.gov/flyfaa/usmap.jsp

The indvidual airline sites also do a good job reporting delays, i.e., http://www.delta.com.

Good luck to your husband!
