When will Katrina make landfall?

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

When will Katrina make landfall?

#1 Postby wxmann_91 » Sun Aug 28, 2005 9:09 pm

I have two questions here - please answer them both!!!

First of all, when do you think Katrina will make landfall? I need to know this, I have school tomorrow and I can't stay up the whole night, but I can stay up for a couple of hours during landfall. I would appreciate experts' opinions, or amateurs that have an extremely good argument for their claim (besides gut feeling), but I rather prefer experts' opinions.

Second of all, (and by the way anyone can answer this question), are you going to pull an all-nighter tonight?

It's hard to know what's mean by landfall when we don't know exactly where it's coming in yet. I'd wait until the 11 p.m. (8 p.m. your time) forecast and see if the direction is still tracking, how far it is from the location that you consider landfall, whether it's Venice or some other point (perhaps Mississippi coastline if the direction changes), and then figure out how fast it's going, and do the math. I think that should give you a very good idea of the landfall timing.I am not weaseling out of the question, I just think this is the best bet for pinpointing a time a little bit more accurately.

The N.O. station just said landfall about 7 a.m. central time. It's moving at 11 mph. But I'd still suggest checking the NHC report this evening.

I am not going to pull an all nighter. I'm going to keep the Channel 4 newsfeed up on my computer and check it in the morning at about 6 a.m. ET when I wake up.

Well wherever NHC forecasts landfall (which would be near Grand Isle).

Thanks for your input. I'm thinking of sleeping around 8:30 PM (PDT) and waking up at 2 or 3 AM (my time again).

well first the all-nighter... I've attempted them in the past during huge hurricanes... rarely succeed... I will try my best though tonight... probably with intermitent naps of course

ok landfall time ... I am an amateur lol so I'll just do the math to find the time of landfall based on extrapolation using these two statements from the 7cdt advisory

Code: Select all

ABOUT 130 MILES
SOUTH OF THE MOUTH OF THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER.

KATRINA IS MOVING TOWARD THE NORTH-NORTHWEST NEAR 11 MPH

so if landfall occurs on the mouth of the Mississippi R and Katrina keeps this exact heading, landfall would be in 130/11= 11 hours and 50 minutes or about 8am edt/7am cdt
