Recon did report the eyewall open to the SW... so something is going on.

I wouldn't quite call it an ERC, but whatever it is, it's having the same effects. Also, the eye is expanding slightly and is now 28nm. Expanding isn't quite what happens in an ERC, but it does show weakening as opposed to a tightening eye and strengthening system. Plus, what would be the size of the eye aroun the 28nm one? It'd be interesting to see that monster pop out.

In most cases around 12 hours.

actually in super storms like this, they say it is common for a rapid ERC that only takes 4-5 hours

How often do ERC ususally occur? I am sure every cane is different, but can they happen more than once a day?

The experts can elaborate..

But IMO this was not a ERC. This is a annular hurricane. In fact I think we are about to see another round of strengthening, it is just now taking in the over 90 degree water.

I think you would be right. some don't know that a large hurrican like this will lose some of it's winds for a few hours but will get them back.

I heard a met on the CBS evening news tonight say that Katrina was not weakening.The drop in strength was due to her eye expanding.Part of EWRC I guess
