Alot of people don't understand... sad truth inside...
I was on some other message boards I visit (it has nothing to do with weather and the people there are oblivious to it) and I made a topic telling anyone in NOLA to get out... and I get replies like this...
oh please, they always exaggerate on these hurricanes. im not going to run away like a little baby. im riding this out.
Alot of people will die.

Yeah - what about all those with no transportation, no relatives, no money, etc. Now is not the time to be so insensitive.

That's ok, but please keep your ID on you at all times, so that the rescue workers will be able to identify your body.

Don't mean to sound cold hearted, but to idiots who make those kind of statements, all I can say is I guess its time to clean out the gene pool!

I agree with you but only in terms of the idiots who want to try and ride this out.
There are so many people who cannot leave and would probably like to and then there are the fools who could leave but won't. Those fools, get no sympathy from me.

I doubt it's insensitivity...
mostly helplessness.
There is nothing that we can do from here, beyond urging with as much emphasis and reason possible, all to get out by whatever means they can.
Be as resourceful as you can, as this IS a matter of life and death right now.

People kill themselves with foolish choices
Maybe so but with this storm, I don't think some people really grasp what is about to happen. And to say that people die in hurricanes because they make foolish choices is a generalization. Some people do the right thing and still die.... Think of it this way.... this is a storm like an F3 or F4 tornado with sustained winds for hours....when you think about it... how can you totally protect yourself from harm. Even the Superdome could be in jeopardy this time.

I agree with you that no one needs to be insensitive. HOWEVER....those who are able to walk COULD have started walking yesterday. A friend of mine and I were talking and we both agreed that if we were there and didn't have the means to leave ($$ or transportation issues), we'd pack up important papers, water & some food in backpacks, load up our kids with the same (she has 5 kids, I have 6) and put extra water/food into strollers along with our infants and we'd start walking. We discussed this when there was a good 36 hours before conditions would begin to deteriorate. If a person walked only 4 mph (realistic speed with kids), and they rested/slept for 6 of those 36 hours, they could feasibly have been 120 miles away when the storm hit. 120 miles to the NW would have gotten a person to a lot safer place.
I know that sounds extreme, but really, if a person had no other choice, they COULD have started hoofin' it. And ya know, someone MIGHT have picked them up as they were walking and made it easier for them.
But honestly, I could not let being homeless or short on money stop me from attempting to get the hell out of that "bowl" and save my own life (and that of my children, as well).
I feel heartbroken for those who truly didn't have the option of leaving ~ THOSE are the ones I feel sorry for. But anyone who had the means to leave and chose not to, well...... I stilll pray they make it through this alive, but I also think they're pretty ignorant for choosing to stay.

appeal to President Bush
Just watched the press conference in Jefferson Parish. The Mayor was pleading for MASH units to be staged to come into the city as soon as possible. Someone asked about marshal law being declared and he responded that this was as close to mashal law as would ever occur in Louisiana.

I also have a lot of sympathy for those that cannot leave or those who are staying to do their duty. (Police, fire & rescue, doctors, nurses, and critical infrastructure personnel.)
It is very hard to be sympathetic to those who stay due to ignorance or false bravado. Many, if not most, have not been through a real hurricane and do not understand that the decisions they made yesterday and today are irrevocable.
When hurricane Bertha came though here, my father called as the winds were starting and asked if I would be coming to Charlotte. (Where he lived.) He was a smart man, but he didn't understand that once it starts, there is no changing the decision that you made the day before. (And this was after Hugo went through Charlotte several years before.)
For some, this may well be the last lesson they learn on this earth. For the survivors, it will be a lesson that they will never forget.

Actually, since it'd likely be impossible to hold onto your id with 200 mph winds, you should suggest they write their name, ss#, and closest relative contact info in indelible ink on their body so the cleanup crews can id their corpse.

MSNBC just had a shot in downtown NO and she said alot of people were walking around, homeless people. And they showed a shot of apparently two homeless guys sitting on a bench in the park with all their belongings. Hopefully they will at least get bussed to the superdome.....but that's another scary scenario. People are running out of options at this point.
