Haven't seen anything yet but I already have some things together to send. I posted about this last night to urge people to give blood, it will be desperately needed. :(

I was getting ready to make a post about the same thing. What do you think the best thing is to get started with?

Cold cash is always the best thing to give. Lets the aid agencies get what they really need, and also lets them purchase from more centralized locations rather than using precious manpower collecting donations from a hundred different sites.

Wonder if this forum could set something that our members could donate cash and they could forward it on to the right parties? Do you think this is possible? Should I PM a moderator? Thanks Debbie

I'll pledge $100 to get us started. Got my checkbook out. This is the time for the Storm2k family to step forward. Just tell me who to make the check out to and where to send it.

Please do contact a mod about it. The easiest way to set something up would be with PayPal.

I am going to go around to different grocery stores and see if they want to start a collection. Get me some info if you have it so we know who to contact to get it to where it needs to go. Lets get at this we all know what they are going to need.

And don't forget, if you give to the Red Cross, MAKE SURE you specify on your check "HURRICANE KATRINA RELIEF." Otherwise, your donation will go to your local chapter, if given locally, or to the general fund, if mailed to the ARC. The way I understand it, when it was explained to me after 9/11, you must specify a cause or fund if you want your donation to be designated and distributed to help in that way.

An idea for those of us who are not local and who are in straightened circumstances but might be able to donate "time."

Children, especially, are likely to lose their favorite books, perhaps favorite toys, homeschooling families will lose books, etc. and perhaps it might be valuable to have those of us in unaffected areas go and look for specific replacement items--copies of the favorite storybook or a replacement stuffed toy, especially for kids who lose a favorite animal that is not a teddy bear or those who lose a specific type of teddy bear, etc.

Perhaps there could be a posted list of specific items to be replaced that we could consult and we could hunt for the replacements... I know from my own childhood that it is not necessarily the "cost" of the item, but the fact that you can't find another one &/or that no one has time to go and hunt for it for you.

Just an idea.
