I just heard the rebroadcast of the interview last night (on WWL?) with the New Orleans mayor when he discussed his conversation with Max Mayfield and Mayfield's recommendation regarding mandatory evacuation.
One thing astounded me totally and completely. The mayor said he was having dinner and expecting "a quiet evening with his wife" when he got a call from the governor telling him Max Mayfield wanted to speak to him.
Why on earth just 24-36 hours out from a possible "worst-case scenario" hurricane hitting your city would you be having a quiet dinner with your wife? Why wouldn't the mayor and the governor both been at some kind of EOC with a hotline to the NHC? Truly, I'm flabbergasted.
I don't know anything about the mayor or Louisiana politics. I hope and pray that the impression of complacency he gave was the wrong one and that all officials are doing their utmost to get people to safety.
By the way, just to confirm what I heard, several of the newspapers also picked up on the mayor's comment about having his dinner interrupted:
"Nagin told Eyewitness News his Saturday evening dinner was interrupted by Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco who told him to call the hurricane center. Officials there recommended evacuating the city, he said."

Note of Interest for NOLA
Our local TV met on ABC-13 in Houston (to distinguish that this was not Dr. Neil Frank who said this) just said that the 29% probability assigned to landfall in New Orleans is the highest percentage the NHC has ever given to any one location!

He mentioned some legalities about forcing people out. Attourneys will take weeks to make some type of decision.
Agreed how do you force out people who have no cars, people in housing projects etc.?
But he should have made the madatory evacuation regardless. Of course there is some concern for looting if all that is left is the riffraff.
But as a leader he should be very direct and order evacuation now.

Do you mean 24 hours out? Because I've seen plenty of strike probabilities of 99% for certain cities within 3-6 hours of landfall.

Kenneth, I certainly didn't mean to downplay the terrible complexities of the situation or the difficulties with evacuation. I feel for the man. Talk about a no-win situation.
I wasn't actually questioning his call on evacuations, per se, just so surprised at the laid back "I was having dinner with my wife and the governor called" comment. I just find it hard to believe that some kind of EOC hadn't already been operating in high gear with the mayor tied to the telephones and the NHC.

I have the webcam up for Tropical Isle on Bourbon Street. and have been watching it on and off for several hours. At 4am there were people just hanging out. Now, there's cars driving around and people wandering the sidewalk but the thing that amazed me is there was a man outside with a broom, dust pan and garbage can who was actually there sweeping up paper litter from the sidewalk. Why bother with litter at this point? It doesn't matter, leave it there and get to a safe place.
The mayor clearly was in denial for far too long and that will cost lives, probably including the people I've watched on the webcam. And if the man I saw was a city employee, shame on the Mayor.
