Well, it's on now.

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

I didn't feel right about this storm from the moment it entered the gulf with it's core intact. Let's just hope something will occur to knock Katrina down a few notches.

Here's my next question.

At what point do skyscrapers (you know, in NO) fail?

160mph surface winds means the tops of those buildings will be getting buffered by 175 - 180mph winds, right?

I agree with drudd. I experienced this beast first hand in south FL. It didn't seem like your ordinary CAT1 that we get every couple of years. Frances and Jeanne had nothing on this cane. The sheer amount of rain and wind I saw were telling enough, and I got the weak north side. I feel for everyone in her path. There is no way I would find myself in the way of this thing.

24 hours for a skyscraper? I thought it would be more like 12 hours @ 115mph would do it, or less.

The real problem for NO is going to be flooding. Your looking at potentially 15 feet of storm surge or more. It's likely to back up into lake pontchartrain (spelling?) then spill into the city. Thats likely to soak what they call ground in that area and weaken the very foundation of the buildings. Then the wind hits...then the wind goes the other way.... BAD situation.

Today's trivia:

What's the strongest hurricane/typhoon/anything to ever make a direct hit on a major metro area?

I got... 1900 Galveston.

"The laws of physics are being tested in the Gulf of Mexico this morning..."

Good one by Jim Cantore. That's as apt of a description as any.
