No. This term seems to be thrown around alot. Every storm that gets in the gulf, people claim it to be annular. Annular storms can maintain an extreme intensity for quite awhile (Isabel) and create their own little enviroment. I for one dont think Katrina's strength has been been steady enough for it to be called annular. Heck, she's barely even had a clear eye for more then 2 hours today.

I don't know what's going on, but one cannot edit their own posts? I was going to make some changes.
The storm is showing signs that it will have a fairly large eye. Those types of eyes will be hard to dissipate because of their size. That is why annular hurricanes tend to have difficulties weakening.
It may not transition to annular (it is difficult to predict that and to qualify, the storm must NOT have any outer feeding bands), but I'm envisioning a storm that will likely look very similar to Hurricane Ivan when it was SE of Louisiana the day of landfall with its large eye.
Not good news with RISING SSTs all the way to the coast...

The eye has opened up significantly during the past half an hour (that doesn't mean that it will become an annular hurricane, but it is a start).
It's interesting that I don't recall a hurricane ever being annular in the Northern Gulf of Mexico. Maybe Camille became an annular hurricane just before landfall and that's how it was able to maintain its strength all the way to the coast.
Let's all hope and pray that this one doesn't become annular because then it would be very difficult for the wind shear to do its work in the northern Gulf coast just before landfall...

Given the ridiculous size of the eye and the donut she's starting to take on, along with the lack of feeder bands... yes, I think she appears to be transitioning to annular. It makes sense, really; it takes perfect conditions to create an annular storm, and the conditions in the Gulf right now are as perfect as they can possibly get.
